Original navy blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, bottom edge of text-block untrimmed. Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v-ix [x: blank] xi [xii: blank] [1] 2-286 [287-288: publisher's ads] + 16-page inserted publisher's catalogue dated October 1904. Top edge a bit dusty, a bright nearly fine copy. #3309. $225. Mary Elizabeth Coleridge (1861-1907) was a great-grand niece to S. T. Coleridge and successfully published fiction and poetry. Her fiction is described as "fantastic, obscure but memorable" (Kemp, Mitchell, Trotter, Edwardian Fiction, p. 71). Sutherland (Victorian Fiction, pp. 137-138) calls her work "very extravagant," "unusually clever," "superior" and "sprightly" and remarks that her "quirky, oblique mode of narration grows on the reader." The present title is a dark, complex and elusive tale with strong hints of the fantastic and criminous. It presents a gloomy meditation on themes implicit in the imagery of shadows -- along with such cognates as portraits, mirrors, impersonations, illusions, ghosts, psychological dislocations, and guilty or bitter memories. The story's milieu is that of artists and musicians, young men and women sensitive to the competing demands of art and love. Its basic structure is tragic. The past, with its crimes and mistakes, follows each character like an inseparable but unstable shadow, or, to use the terminology of Greek myth and drama, nemesis. The present title was the only one of the author's novels to be listed in Hubin as a crime novel. But here there is no detective except for the inexorable workings of nemesis. And the very existence of a crime or crimes is only revealed with a delayed and gradual narration of the all-important back-story. Three English art students had formed a quasi-romantic triangle whose intense and jealous friendships eventually bring about the deaths of all three men. (This tragic trio also might be understood as a "shadow" or reversal of the warm trio of English art students presented in Du Maurier's enormously popular Trilby, published ten years earlier.) The densely tangled Parisian back-story is the mainspring of all the novel's subsequent events. The author makes use of elements -- structural, thematic and atmospheric -- from several popular story types of the day. A genuine ghost does make an appearance late in the novel, but it is the air of fatalism hanging over the whole thing that anchors this novel most firmly in the domain of the fantastic.
