Original publisher's embossed brown cloth, later neatly rebacked, Rubbed and marked, spine dulled. Contemporary ticket of booksellers W. Pritchard of Carnarvon, armorial bookplate and inked ownership inscription of Lord Newborough to FEP, scattered spotting. The first edition of this catalogue of literary figures, The Authors of England contains 14 portraits engraved on steel by Achille Collas' patent process, 'anaglyptography'. The technique involved a tracing arm, which, when moved over a rounded object such as a medallion, mechanically produced an engraving which appeared embossed. The French machine required was also used to produce The Great Seals of England (1837). This edition contains the valuable final section 'Memorial of facts connected with the history of medallic engraving, and the process of M. Collas', which is frequently omitted, and explains the method as a whole. Size: Quarto.
