Thomas Henry (illustrator). A Very Good copy of this rare 1st edition / 7th printing. Light foxing throughout, though pages remain generally bright and clean. Bright red boards are clean and unmarked, with only the slightest sun fading to the top of the spine where the dust jacket did not cover. Gift inscription to the frontispiece dated Christmas 1938. Illustrated dust jacket, priced 2/6, has been placed in a protective cover at some stage; it remains intact and bright but is ragged at the edges (see photos).

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Ex-library. Ex-library copies with number on spine, book plate in front, and pocket in rear. Most pages have slight foxing, although there is more on some. Covers have slight wear to outer corners and spine ends. Volume 1: spine edges are almost entirely split, spine back strip is loosely attached. One plate is detached but present. Complete in two (2) volumes, uniformly bound in blue cloth, spine panels lettered and decorated in gilt, untrimmed edges with top edge in gilt. Ex-library copy (Athenaeum of Philadelphia), relatively minor marks and stamps, with call labels on both lower spine panels and Athenaeum labels partially obscuring gilt spine decorations. Interiors with bookplates mounted inside front covers, stamped title pages, a few internal stamps, circulation pocket ghosts inside back covers. Otherwise, rubbed spine extremities with minor surface loss, surface loss to 1/2" at heel of Vol. I.
