Print. Condition: Very Good+. First Edition. The Illustrated London News; No. 2071; Vol. LXXIV; 1 pages; Image measures 14.5 X 9 inches; matted measures 22 X 14 inches. Full page with two wood engravings from the February 22, 1879 issue of The London Illustrated News depicting Helpmakaar, Near Rourke's Drift AND On the Lower Tugela -- each From a Sketch by Major North Crealock. Lower right corner monogram "J.G.," engraved by John Greenaway, father of Kate Greenaway, who was a draughtsman and wood-engraver whose illustrations frequently appeared in the Illustrated London News and Punch. First Engraving: The Battle of Rorke's Drift (1879), also known as the Defence of Rorke's Drift, was an engagement in the Anglo-Zulu War. The successful British defence of the mission station of Rorke's Drift, under the command of Lieutenants John Chard of the Royal Engineers and Gonville Bromhead, began when a large contingent of Zulu warriors broke off from their main force during the final hour of the British defeat at the day-long Battle of Isandlwana on 22 January 1879, diverting 6 miles (9.7 km) to attack Rorke's Drift later that day and continuing into the following day. Just over 150 British and colonial troops defended the station against attacks by 3,000 to 4,000 Zulu warriors. The massive but piecemeal attacks by the Zulu on Rorke's Drift came very close to defeating the much smaller garrison, but were consistently repelled.[9] Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded to the defenders, along with a number of other decorations and honours. Second engraving: In February 1878 a commission was appointed by Henry Bulwer, the lieutenant-governor of Natal since 1875, to report on the boundary question. The commission reported in July and found almost entirely in favour of the contention of the Zulu. The third incident occurred in September, when two men were detained while on a sand bank of the Thukela River near the Middle Drift. Sir Bartle Frere described this matter in a despatch to Sir Michael Hicks Beach, who had replaced Carnarvon as Secretary of State for the Colonies: Mr. Smith, a surveyor in the Colonial Engineer Department, was on duty inspecting the road down to the Tugela, near Fort Buckingham, which had been made a few years ago by order of Sir Garnet Wolseley, and accompanied by Mr. Deighton, a trader, resident at Fort Buckingham, went down to the ford across the Tugela. The stream was very low, and ran under the Zulu bank, but they were on this side of it, and had not crossed when they were surrounded by a body of 15 or 20 armed Zulus, made prisoners, and taken off with their horses, which were on the Natal side of the river, and roughly treated and threatened for some time; though, ultimately, at the instance of a headman who came up, they were released and allowed to depart. Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. CREALOCK, Major-General Henry Hope, CB, CMG (1831-1891). Sevastopol: The Evening Star that Rises over Sevastopol at Sunset. Signed and dated lower right: "H. Hope Crealock / Septr. 6th 1855." Pen and brown ink on fine wove tissue paper, inscribed below image "The Evening Star that rises over Sevastopol at sunset!! visible from the Eagle's Nest with the naked eye of a clear evening / from my Journal of the Campaign in the Crimea"; annotation in Crealock's hand on verso, "damp the back of it / will come straight." 270 × 410 mm (image), mounted to 410 × 550 mm overall. A couple of small, closed tears to upper edge, toning and handling, overall, very good and a well-preserved survival. Drawn in the final days of the Crimean campaign, this delicately executed sketch by Major-General Henry Hope Crealock captures a hilltop view of the siege of Sevastopol. Working in fine brown ink on thin tracing paper, Crealock depicts an officer and a lady seated together on a ridge overlooking the devastated city and harbour, the sun setting quietly over the Black Sea. The inscription suggests the drawing was taken "from my Journal of the Campaign in the Crimea," not as a literal journal page but as part of Crealock's wider visual record of his time in the Crimea. The use of tissue-weight paper, common among military topographers, allowed sketches to be folded into campaign folios and traced over for engraving. Crealock, educated at Rugby, served in the 90th Light Infantry and landed at Balaklava in December 1854. He was mentioned in despatches for gallantry at the assaults on the Redan and went on to distinguished service in India, China and Africa, along with illustrating Wolf-Hunting, or Wild Sport in Lower Brittany (1875) and contributing drawings to the Illustrated London News. This original ink sketch from the very beginnings of his career as an illustrator is scarce. Signed by Author(s).

Cape Town, 1989. Cloth, with dust-jacket. With illustrations. XIX,195 pp. Van Riebeeck Society, 2nd series, 19. - Major John North Crealock (1837-1895) fought in a number of colonial wars, including the Indian Mutiny and the Anglo-Zulu War. This volume is a detailed account of the warfare conducted against the Xhosa in the last phases of the frontier war of 1877-1878. Opinionated and inefficient, Crealock nevertheless gives a sober account of the military situation.
