Tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece in each volume. First edition of Edward Daniel Clarke's magnum opus "Travels in Various Countries of Europe, Asia and Africa" the author's personal account of a fascinating journey throughout three continents. Following a tour of Scandinavia in 1799, Edward Daniel Clarke (1769-1822) travelled through Russia and the Crimea before proceeding to Constantinople, Rhodes, and afterwards Egypt and Palestine. Greece was the country next visited. While touring this country, Clarke, as a mineralogist and antiquary, collected marbles, coins and vases and purchased a large ancient statue at Eleusis. From Athens he proceeded by land to Constantinople, and after a short stay in that city directed his course homewards through Rumelia, Austria, Germany and France. Each of the six volumes is lavishly illustrated throughout with numerous in-text vignettes and woodcuts, as well as full-page copper plates (many folded), depicting views, monuments, natives in traditional costume, ceremonies and processions, antiquities, etc. Includes several folded maps and charts. All the 185 copper plates and 157 vignettes and cuts are accounted for. Plates engraved by Joseph Skelton, R. Pollard, Laetitia and Elizabeth Byrne, F. R. Hay, J. Fittler, and R. Cooper after illustrations by E. D. Clarke, Angelica Clarke, Guarenghi, Martin, Dreier, W. Havell, Camporesi, J. B. Lusieri, Morritt, W. Harraden, Grelot, Fauvel, G. Wilkins, Henry Wrighte, and Preaux. Most of the delightful vignettes were engraved by Elizabeth and Laetitia Byrne. The maps and plans were engraved by S. I. Neele, and H. Mutlow. Some offsetting to text pages facing plates. Moderate to heavy foxing to plates throughout. Minor foxing to text pages. Sporadic clear water-staining along edges of plates in second volume (Part 2, section 1). Ex-library copy with perforating library stamp to each title page, and small reference stamp at inner gutter of the first text leaf of each volume (not affecting lettering). Bindings in overall very good, interior in good to very good condition.

Condition: Near Fine. A beautiful evocative print, which was plate 8 in the important color plate book, "The Costumes of Yorkshire". The print is dated 1813, while the book from which it was extracted was published in 1814, but we believe many of the plates in the book were issued in 1813. (Note on the print the date of 1818 was given, but this was a misprint and the 1818 date appears on copies of the 1814 publication as well.) One wouldn't know that this print was from a book, and it is possible it was never bound in the book. 26 by 36.5 cm. Visible, 22 by 32 cm. With matting, 33 by 42 cm. The matting of the print is clearly professionally done and very handsome, with its decorative ruled lines. We would be very comfortable keeping this matting if we were to frame the print for our walls. The print proper has a few small light fox marks. We don't think these in any way compromise the print. The full sheet has a small corner chip completely concealed by the matting.

Condition: Near Fine. A beautiful evocative print, which was plate 8 in the important color plate book, "The Costumes of Yorkshire". The title of the print, "Lowker", is a word of Yorkshire dialect meaning someone who weeds a cornfield, as the assembled group of six farm workers are apparently doing, with what looks like the overseer on horseback in the background. The print is dated 1813, while the book from which it was extracted was published in 1814, but we believe many of the plates in the book were issued in 1813. One wouldn't know that this print was from a book other than its lower edge, hidden from view, shows signs of having been so. 25 by 36.5 cm. Visible, 21 by 32 cm. With matting, 33 by 42 cm. The matting of the print is clearly professionally done and very handsome, with its decorative ruled lines. The matting has a few very faint stains that we ourselves could live with, thus making the print ready to be framed as is. If these marks should bother the owner, they could probably be removed with professional remediation, although one can certainly choose to re-mat before framing. The print proper has a few small light fox marks. We don't think these in any way compromise the print.

A view of Waterloo Bridge, with the sun setting behind it, after an original by the British landscape painter Henry Haseler, one of only three views of London that the artist produced. The Adelphi of the title are the Adelphi Buildings, a block of terraced houses designed by the Adams brothers. They named the buildings in an act of self-promotion (from adelphoi, meaning brothers) and through royal favour were allowed to develop the shore from the Strand to the river by Act of Parliament in 1771, fuelling derisive commentary from a contemporary satirist: "The Princess, fond of raw-boned faces, May give you all our posts and places; Take all to gratify your pride But dip your oatmeal in the Clyde" (Graham). Daniel Havell (1785-1822) was an English topographical engraver, whose works fuelled the booming demand for aquatint views during the reign of George III. Henry Haseler (fl.1814-25) was an English artist and engraver. BL Maps K.Top.21.57.4; Roderick Graham, Arbiter of Elegance: A Biography of Robert Adam (Edinburgh: Birlinn, 2009), p.264. Pair of color printed aquatints, with hand-coloring, engraved by R. and D. Havell. Lovely pair of color aquatints depicting a naval battle between the British and French in the Adriatic Sea during the Napoleonic Wars. A pair of engravings from a suite of hand-colored plates recounting the Battle of Lissa on March 13, 1811. "The Battle of Lissa (sometimes called the Battle of Vis; French: Bataille de Lissa; Italian: Battaglia di Lissa; Croatian: Vika bitka) was a naval action fought between a British frigate squadron and a larger squadron of French and Italian frigates and smaller ships on 13 March 1811 during the Adriatic campaign of the Napoleonic Wars. The engagement was fought in the Adriatic Sea for possession of the strategically important island of Lissa (also known as Vis), from which the British squadron had been disrupting French shipping in the Adriatic. The French needed to control the Adriatic to supply a growing army in the Illyrian Provinces, and consequently dispatched an invasion force in March 1811 consisting of six frigates, numerous smaller craft and a battalion of Italian soldiers. The French invasion force under Bernard Dubourdieu was met by Captain William Hoste and his four ships based on the island. In the subsequent battle, Hoste sank the French flagship, captured two others, and scattered the remainder of the Franco-Venetian squadron. The battle has been hailed as an important British victory, due to both the disparity between the forces and the signal raised by Hoste, a former subordinate of Horatio Nelson. Hoste had raised the message "Remember Nelson" as the French bore down, and had then manoeuvred to drive Dubourdieu's flagship ashore and scatter his squadron in what has been described as "one of the most brilliant naval achievements of the war."
