This the second edition of the atlas volume, first published in 1828. Suchet's famous Memoirs on Napoleon's campaigns in Spain between 1808 and 1814. Louis Gabriel Suchet (1770-1826), Duke of Albufera, was one of Napoleon's most brilliant generals. After participating in the siege of Zaragoza, he was appointed general of the army of Aragon and governor of the province, which, through wise administration and courage, he brought to submission in two years. He defeated Blake's army at María on June 14, 1809, and on April 22, 1810, inflicted a severe defeat on O'Donnell. After being named Marshal of France on July 8, 1811, he achieved the conquest of Valencia in 1812, for which he was rewarded with the title of Duke of Albufera. By Louis XVIII he was made a peer of France on June 4, but, having helped Napoleon during the "hundred days", he was deprived of his nobility on July 24, 1815.

2 volumes in octavo. 21×13.5 cm. li, [i in blank], 376; ix, [i in blank], 570, [iv] pages. Bindings with gilt tooled leather spines. Illustrated within the text; the final pages contain tables of statistical data; the first volume features a portrait of the author by Paulin-Guérin, from the National Museum of the Palace of Versailles, protected by a sheet of tracing paper, opposing the title page; in the second volume 2 fold-out tables, the first on the origin of revenue and the second on the origin of expenditure, relating to note 47 on page 406, in the margin. Copy with leather flaws and damage on the caps; an oleographic stamp from Livraria Antiga e Moderna on the rear pastedown; damp stains and water marks. One atlas is missing. The preliminary pages of the first volume contain a table of contents [and the second volume] and a preliminary note. The work comprises a total of 21 chapters divided between the two volumes: the first volume contains Chapters 1 to 10, and the second volume contains the remaining chapters. One of the most important military accounts of the Peninsular War. These memoirs detail the administrative and military strategies employed by Suchet, which made him the only one of Napoleon?s marshals to earn his marshal?s baton solely through his victories in Spain. The work focuses on military operations in Aragon, Catalonia and Valencia. Unlike other French generals, Suchet distinguished himself through his ability to pacify and administer the occupied provinces, reducing local resistance through a style of governance considered fair and efficient for the time. Louis-Gabriel Suchet, Duke of Albufera of Valencia (Lyon, France, 1770 ? Marseille, 1826), was a Marshal of France, one of Napoleon?s most brilliant generals, and a notable commander of the armies of Aragon during the Peninsular War. In 1792, whilst serving as a volunteer in the National Guard cavalry, he demonstrated military skills that secured him a rapid promotion. He was present at the siege of Toulon in 1793 and, after serving in the Tyrol in 1797 and also in Switzerland in 1797?1798, was appointed chief of staff to Guillaume Brune.
