La basilica di San Marco a Venezia è uno fra i più importanti edifici sacri del medioevo. Nonostante sia anche uno dei più studiati, alcuni aspetti sostanziali della sua storia sono tuttora incerti. Dal 2002, in occasione del restauro del fianco nord della basilica, un gruppo di studiosi tedeschi ha indagato con metodi all'avanguardia lo sviluppo architettonico dell'edificio, dalle strutture preesistenti alla basilica contariniana dell'XI secolo fino ai restauri moderni. In parallelo, accurate ricerche d'archivio hanno messo a confronto i documenti dei restauri otto-novecenteschi, in parte inediti, con le evidenze studiate dal vivo. Alla luce delle nuove conoscenze, la facciata nord - a lungo considerata una facciata minore, all'ombra della basilica - risulta ora rivestire un ruolo fondamentale per la storia architettonica dell'intero edificio. Punti salienti dell'indagine sono gli "impulsi" che San Marco riceveva dalla sua chiesa gemella, San Teodoro, la funzione della zona nord della basilica come luogo di sepoltura e l'aspetto della facciata prima del criticato restauro ottocentesco, le cui manomissioni sono ora chiaramente evidenziate. The splendor of the tombs of the doges has always amazed visitors of Venice. Already in 1484, the German pilgrim Felix Faber noted: "Never have I seen more costly and extravagant tombs. Even the graves of the popes in Rome cannot compare with these."
