En "Memorias del subdesarrollo" (1965), novela icónica de Edmundo Desnoes, asistimos a la debacle íntima y social de Sergio Malabre, un escritor que, viendo marcharse incluso a familia y amigos, decide permanecer en Cuba tras el triunfo de la Revolución, por lo que queda convertido en testigo de un panorama y un entorno que le resultan tan absurdos como irredimibles. Ya en el contexto de la literatura cubana de los años 60, "Memorias del subdesarrollo" resultó una obra de difícil catalogación, pues quedó fuera de las dos tendencias dominantes del momento: la literatura de compromiso y el preciosismo barroco abanderado por Alejo Carpentier.
