First Edition
Henry William Batley, Henry Robertson, Charles Holmes, Henry Macbeth-Raeburn, Herbert Dicksee, William Strang, Francis Walker (illustrator). This is a two-volume copy of The Pirate by the great Scottish novelist Sir Walter Scott (1770-1832). It is the 14th of his Waverley novels which, for nearly a century, were the most-read novels in Europe. The Pirate was first published in 1822. It surrounds the life of the Scottish pirate John Gow, who was executed for his many crimes in 1725. These books are part of an incomplete set I have, which is also listed here. Between 1892 and 1894, the Boston publisher Estes and Lauriat published the collected Waverley novels. In 48 volumes, they published a leather set, a marbled-cover set and a plain set. I have volumes of the plain set. By 'plain', I mean attractive navy blue boards with ivory title plates on the spine. The publisher has stated 'Large Paper'; the paper is thick and of best quality. There were 1000 copies of this set printed. This is set #679. That is stamped on each book in red. There is red type on the title page and on the tissue paper fronting each illustration. Each book has six black and white illustrations. The illustrations in these two books are covered with tissue paper. They are stated as original etchings by Henry Robertson (English 1839-1921), Charles Holmes (English 1868-1936), Henry William Batley (English 1837-1907), Henry Macbeth-Raeburn (Scottish 1860-1947), Herbert Dicksee (English 1862-1942), William Strang (Scottish 1859-1921), and Francis Walker (Irish 1848-1916). In both cases, the title panels are faded and scratched. Volume II has minor spots on covers. Volume I's covers are perfect. Both books have fully-intact gold trim; only the tops of the pages were originally trimmed. In the case of both books, the interiors are perfect. No foxing. They have definitely not been read, or possibly even opened.

Add to basketLarge watercolour and bodycolour painting depicting a lion crouching on a riverbank drinking from the water at dusk. 32.5 x 55cm. Signed to the foot at the left "Herbert Dicksee". Contained in a modern blue and gilt wood frame (55.5 x 76cm in total), the glazing has previously been removed but can be easily replaced by a professional framer (we have left the painting unglazed at present for ease of shipping). Original exhibition label affixed to the reverse of the frame for the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours with the title, artist's name, address, and price completed in ink: "Drinking Lion / Herbert Dicksee / 7 Kidderpore Avenue NW3 / £31 10. 0.". The painting remains in excellent clean condition, the colours remaining bright and fresh. The frame is in very good order. A large, striking and typically atmospheric watercolour by the English animal artist Herbert Thomas Dicksee (1862-1942), forming a sensitive depiction of one his most popular subjects, the African lion. Belonging to an illustrious artistic family, Dicksee initially studied at the Slade School of Art under Alphonse Legros, first exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1885. Best known for his perceptive, sympathetic depictions of animals, particularly dogs, which were popularised through his mastery of the art of etching, Dicksee was also famous for his powerful, lifelike paintings of big cats, of which he was a great admirer and skilled interpreter. Dicksee spent a significant amount of time at London Zoo observing the lions, tigers and other big cats, honing his understanding of their form, behaviours and characters. As a 1906 article in the Windsor Magazine records, Dicksee would "rise at 6 o'clock in the morning to visit the Zoological Gardens before visitors could arrive and obstruct his view. There he would be seen, morning after morning, making sketches of the lions and tigers in the reposeful intervals of their restless movements." Provenance: Exhibited by the artist at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.
