Twelve volumes, 8vo, engraved frontispiece and pp. cxxxiii, [iii], 292; [iv], 415; [iv], 486; [iv], 499; [iv], 519; [iv], 556; [ii], 526, [1]; [iv], 513, [1]; [iv], 489, [1]; [iv], 530, [1]; [iv], 535, [1]; [iv], 436, [20] index and errata; a very good copy in contemporary tree calf, spines with morocco labels, some joints a little weak, but sound. An important collection: the first edition of Dodsley's Collection of Old Plays was published in 1744, and this edition was completely revised by Isaac Reed, with considerable assistance from George Steevens - some copies acknowledge Reed as editor on the title page to volume I. It includes a substantial new preface in volume I, textual collations and hundreds of notes which are not in the original edition. Lowndes p. 1883, recording that 'Many copies of this edition were destroyed by fire'. Indeed ESTC would suggest this to be so, as copies of this edition recorded seem to number about half that of the 1744 edition, even though one would expect more copies of this one to be printed, and a greater survival rate.

Dodsley's avowed aim was 'to preserve to the public those poetical performances, which seemed to merit a longer rememberance than what would probably be secured to them by the Manner wherein they were originally published'. How well he succeeded was pointed out by R. W. Chapman: 'Gray's poems were not collected in a popular form until 1768, Johnson's not until 1785; but The Vanity of Human Wishes, the Drury-Lane Prologue, and some of Gray's Odes were universally accessible because they were in Dodsley', otherwise 'they must have been almost forgotten for twenty years of more'.The success of his Collection prompted Dodsley immediately to set about revising and expanding it. A second, revised edition appeared in the same year, and two more editions by 1755, when a fourth volume was added; two further volumes were published in 1758.Case 458, 1(a)-3(a); Rothschild 804.
