[a lovely copy, no discernible wear but with a former owner's initials plus date & place of purchase written in ink along the edge of the rear pastedown (concealed beneath the jacket flap); the jacket itself is flawless]. (The Sorrowful Mysteries of Brother Athelstan) Series (map of London) The second book in this long-running mystery series set in "the scabrous and pungent world of medieval London," and featuring the crime-solving Dominican monk Brother Athelstan, clerk to the Falstaffian Coroner of London. This book pits the duo "against a secret killer lurking in the Tower of London. Inside the Tower, the dreaded Constable, Sir Ralph Whitton, is dead -- his throat slit in his own locked room under the noses of his own guards. Outside in the blustery London night, two of Athelstan's suspects, old crusader comrades of Whitton's, have fallen to their deaths in cunning moves of foul play. And meanwhile, a robber is desecrating Athelstan's parish cemetery.".

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine dj. Illustrated by (dj illustration) Christopher Zacharow (illustrator). First American Edition. [a nice-looking book (a review copy, with the original publisher's slip laid in), the only blemishes being a tiny smudge on the fore-edge and the former owner's initials plus date & place of purchase written in ink along the edge of the rear pastedown (concealed beneath the jacket flap); the jacket has a teensy touch of wear along the top edge, that will essentially disappear inside a new mylar jacket protector]. (The Sorrowful Mysteries of Brother Athelstan) Series (map of London) The debut novel in this long-running mystery series featuring the crime-solving Dominican monk, clerk to the Coroner of London, set in 14th-century England. (As of 2026 there have been 24 book in the series; except for the first seven, they have all been published under the author's real name.) "Meet young Brother Athelstan, a dedicated Dominican monk with two callings. In one of medieval London's poorest parishes, he atones for his past sins by ministering to prostitutes, thieves and other castoffs. But it is as clerk to the Falstaffian coroner of London, Sir John Cranston, examining the bodies of the freshly, foully murdered, that he has come to understand how dark and villainous the human heart can be. The year is 1336, the king of England is a ten-year-old boy and his regent, John of Gaunt, is scheming for the throne. When death, in the form of hideous murders, begins to stalk the home of one of Gaunt's aristocratic followers, Brother Athelstan and Sir John are sent to investigate.".

Archaeological investigations, undertaken in 1997 and 1998, revealed further evidence of an important multi-period site located on the crest and south-east-facing slope of St Anne s Hill, Eastbourne, East Sussex Around 100 Middle/Late Iron Age storage pits were uncovered: many more than any other non-hillfort site in Sussex and with evidence that grain processing as well as storage may have been carried out at the site. Almost certainly connected are secondary religious offerings deposited within the pits. Soon after the Roman conquest there was a major reorganisation of the landscape with a new field-system and trackway, perhaps as a result of the foundation of villa estates in the area. In the 5th century an Early Anglo-Saxon cemetery was established on the hill, with 193 graves and 11 urned cremations recorded during these excavations. These ranged in date from the 5th and 6th centuries to the 7th century and the accompanying grave goods suggest a community mixed in character.
