Se possiamo conoscere e far rivivere ancora oggi la figura di Matilde lo dobbiamo soprattutto a Donizone, che nella Vita di Matilde ha descritto i momenti salienti della sua esistenza, dei suoi antenati, e insieme le tappe fondamentali del dissidio tra impero e papato che è stato alla base della nascita dell'Europa medievale.
