Bound in contemporary half black morocco leather with gilt bands by Wilkinson of Hertford, blue cloth covered boards. Contents clean and tight. Very good.[Bibliographic note: This work is renowned for its outstanding colour plates, some of which required printing from up to 14 different colour blocks (including metallic inks), resulting in a quality of colour printing so excellent that it has remained unsurpassed. But this meticulous chromolithographic printing was incredibly expensive and labour intensive. The project was hugely ambitious - to cover every known species of the World's Macrolepidoptera, but it was plagued by setbacks including two world wars and was never finished; after almost 50 years the project finally came to an end in 1954. The most important collections of butterflies and moths were consulted including those of L. W. Rothschild of Tring, the British Museum, the Paris Natural History Museum, and so on]. Folio. …

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. First Edition. 613 pages (complete). TEXT ONLY NO PLATES. A generously, avidly owned copy. From the library of Roy Hew Russell Stevenson whose most interesting ex-libris plate is on the front pastedown. Stevenson was a well-connected, diligent lepidopterist who is known as the first to put some order to Rhodesian butterflies. Included is correspondence of lepidopterist concerns, addressed to Stevenson, from Dr Patrick Roche (Senior Pathologist in Charge Forensic Science Laboratory at Oshodi in Nigeria, and from Elliot Pinhey, who became an illustrious lepidopterist as a specialist in African butterflies and odonates. Attached to a frontispage is a map of Southern Rhodesia which is marked and annotated by Stevenson. Captain Stevenson also signed the early pages several times. Rebound by Stevenson whose initials are stamped at the bottom of the spine. Half leather. The leathered corners and spine are worn, scuffed, marked. The boards are also scuffed, marked, with shelving, stacking and handling wear. The contents bear evidence of repeated use throughout. There are annotations. There are storage, age-related marks throughout. Paper-trims are worn. The pages are relaxed. Here and there Stevenson has inserted further notes both typed and handwritten. Despite all the distractions, the pages are clear, generally clean. They are assured and confident, diligent, magisterial in aspect and reality, bold and benevolent, bountiful and amenable. Please note that due to the weight of the book, should the book need be posted to the outside of South Africa, extra postal charges may be required. fk. Text and plates bound in one volume, with the separate title pages and errata present. Intended to be an exhaustive account of Butterflies the world over, Die Gross-Schmetterlinge de Erde was begun in 1909 by its editor Adalbert Seitz. Seitz chose to use a 10-14 chromolithography process for the illustrations of his work. The resultant vibrant chromolithographs that were produced have come to be regarded as unsurpassed in beauty and quality. Seitz intended to complete this work by 1912 in three languages (German, French & English). However, this goal was somewhat optimistic as portions of the work were still in process as late as 1954, 17 years after Seitz's death. Die Gross-Schmetterlinge de Erde was halted in that year leaving the project incomplete in all three languages. Contents in very good condition throughout, a little tape-staining to paste-downs and free endpapers, not affecting text. Although Adalbert Seitz initially studied medicine for five years, he then switched to zoology and eventually became the director of the Frankfurt Zoo. In 1908 he retired to work on Die Gross-'Schmetterlinge der Erde', or 'The Macrolepidoptera of the World', which was intended to be a sixteen volume series of all the known larger butterflies and moths of the world. This two-part volume, which has been rebound in beautiful blue Morocco at a later date, has 104 plates printed in 10-14 colors and covers the Indo-Australian bombyces and sphinges. Hard Cover. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Preface dated 1909. The English edition translated by Dr. K. Jordan. Bound in one volume pp. [8], 379, [5] + 89 fine chomolithographed plates. Bound in contemporary (publisher's?) half black leather with black textured cloth covered boards, gilt lettering to the spine. A little general wear and some rubbing to extremities and joints, professional and inconspicuous repair to head and tail of joints. Contents clean and tight, original grey paper endpapers, paper and plates toned as usual, a little offsetting to one or two plates, very short nicks to the lower margins of pages 229-234. Overall a very good copy of sought after vol. I, tome I, which covers European butterflies. [Bibliographic note: This work, which was published in three language editions, German, English, & French is renowned for its outstanding colour plates, some of which required printing from up to 14 different colour blocks (including metallic inks), resulting in quality of colour printing so excellent that it has remained unsurpassed. But this meticulous chromolithographic printing was incredibly expensive and labour intensive. The project was hugely ambitious - to cover every known species of the World's Macrolepidoptera, but it was plagued by setbacks including two world wars and was never finished, after almost 50 years the project finally came to an end in 1954. The most important collections of butterflies and moths were consulted including those of L. W. Rothschild of Tring, the British Museum, the Paris Natural History Museum, and so on. Comparatively recently, having been out of print for over half a century, a number of original sets were discovered in the printer's warehouse and these have been marketed with a hefty price tag. The publisher tended to use the same casings for each volume regardless of how thick that volume was, so where a volume only consists of say 25 plates, the binding/casing appear too large at the spine for the contents, or alternatively blank pages were inserted at the rear.] Size: Folio (32 x 25 cm). Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. The French edition (text in French) with the publisher's label pasted to the title page. 2 volumes (complete text & plates) Pp. [12], 663 + typescript on thick paper titled "Index to genera" bound in at the rear. The plate volume includes 104 chromolithographed plates numbered 1-100 but with additional plates 55B, 55C, 56B & 56C. The standard of printing of the plates is outstanding many heightened with metalic inks. Bound in later plain faux-leather blue cloth, without titling. Very good with minimal wear. Contents clean and tight. A very good set of volume X covering the Bombyces and the hawkmoths. [Bibliographic note: the general title page is dated 1908, the title page for Vol. X is undated but the first part of the text is dated 1911and the last part of the text is dated 1930. The German and English editions of vol. X were completed in 1933 with around 900 pages, so perhaps the last few years were not translated into French, but this copy has its full complement of 104 plates. This work is renowned for its outstanding colour plates, some of which required printing from up to 14 different colour blocks (including metallic inks), resulting in a quality of colour printing so excellent that it has remained unsurpassed.
