paperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that… encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only. Dunkley, Jack (illustrator).

Add to basketSoftcover. Condition: Fair. 96 pages, card covers. Covers chipped and worn, with a little loss at the corners. Jack Dunkley (1906-1994) gained lasting recognition at the Daily Mirror as creator of the long-running strip The Larks (1957-1985). Beginning with sports cartoons titled Sport Shorts in the 1930s, he later illustrated e…ditorial pieces and popular features such as Patsy (cookery) and Mr. Digwell (gardening). The Larks, portraying the everyday life of the Lark family, became his signature work, enduring nearly three decades until its conclusion in 1985. Dunkley's Grow Flowers (1954) was one of the Daily Mirror's "Famous Strip Guide"Â titles, a 96 page softcover booklet that blended month by month gardening instruction with his lively cartoons. Designed as a practical calendar for readers, it offered advice on soil preparation, planting, and seasonal care, all enlivened by Dunkley's humorous illustrations. This project showed his versatility, moving beyond entertainment into popular education, where comic art became a tool for everyday skills. Alongside Grow Flowers, Dunkley contributed several enduring strips to the Mirror. His gardening humour continued in Mr. Digwell, while domestic life was portrayed in The Larks (1957-1985), a family strip that ran for nearly three decades. He also illustrated Patsy, a cookery feature, and earlier sports cartoons under Sport Shorts. Together, these works reveal Dunkley's range from instructional guides to lighthearted family and lifestyle strips, cementing his reputation as one of the Mirror's most adaptable illustrators. Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. This is the Daily Mirror Vintage Learn To Cook Book from 1948. It is filled with insights into the post-WW2 years, with the rationing restrictions. Brilliant drawings by the great Jack Dunkley; this is the core of the book, many pages of easy to follow recipes using the restricted ingredients av…ailable in those times. And the recipes and tips are still useful today. Obviously, this is a perfect book for cook book collectors, but it is also useful for research into those far off times. Fascinating insights into 'normal' family life and cooking. Brilliant ads dotted throughout the book. This is becoming quite RARE. And the fact that it is also well-used means that there are a few bent over corners, and could that possibly be a tiny bit of organic matter here and there???? Spiral bound, with stiff card covers. Utterly beguiling! Beautiful drawing from the great Jack Dunkley.

A nice VG copy. A corner crease to the bottom right-hand corner of the front cover and another to the bottom left-hand corner of the back panel. Spi…ral binding sound. Great period adverts as well. No inscriptions. Patsy's cartoon strips were run by the Daily Mirror in post-war years to help new cooks navigate their way through, not only unfamiliar recipes, but post-war rationing and shortages. Patsy learns to cook in the company of Peter, her husband, Joan Featherpenny, Mum, Dad and Mrs Always. "When Patsy got married to Peter in 1946 she hardly knew how to cook an egg. So with help from her mum and two neighbours she set out to teach herself how to cook. There are many thousands of Patsies in the world who don't know how to cook but this book shares the secret she's discovered, cooking isn't really that hard once you've got the hang of it. You'll also read about Patsy's other great adventure, her first baby and how that affects her and Peter. This is a unique book, it's a cookbook set out like a comic book" (Country House Library) A nostalgic look at post-war Britain in comic-book style. A nice copy.
