Jack Dunkley (1906-1994) gained lasting recognition at the Daily Mirror as creator of the long-running strip The Larks (1957-1985). Beginning with sports cartoons titled Sport Shorts in the 1930s, he later illustrated editorial pieces and popular features such as Patsy (cookery) and Mr. Digwell (gardening). The Larks, portraying the everyday life of the Lark family, became his signature work, enduring nearly three decades until its conclusion in 1985. Dunkley's Grow Flowers (1954) was one of the Daily Mirror's "Famous Strip Guide"Â titles, a 96 page softcover booklet that blended month by month gardening instruction with his lively cartoons. Designed as a practical calendar for readers, it offered advice on soil preparation, planting, and seasonal care, all enlivened by Dunkley's humorous illustrations. This project showed his versatility, moving beyond entertainment into popular education, where comic art became a tool for everyday skills. Alongside Grow Flowers, Dunkley contributed several enduring strips to the Mirror. His gardening humour continued in Mr. Digwell, while domestic life was portrayed in The Larks (1957-1985), a family strip that ran for nearly three decades. He also illustrated Patsy, a cookery feature, and earlier sports cartoons under Sport Shorts. Together, these works reveal Dunkley's range from instructional guides to lighthearted family and lifestyle strips, cementing his reputation as one of the Mirror's most adaptable illustrators. Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. This is the Daily Mirror Vintage Learn To Cook Book from 1948. It is filled with insights into the post-WW2 years, with the rationing restrictions. Brilliant drawings by the great Jack Dunkley; this is the core of the book, many pages of easy to follow recipes using the restricted ingredients available in those times. And the recipes and tips are still useful today. Obviously, this is a perfect book for cook book collectors, but it is also useful for research into those far off times. Fascinating insights into 'normal' family life and cooking. Brilliant ads dotted throughout the book. This is becoming quite RARE. And the fact that it is also well-used means that there are a few bent over corners, and could that possibly be a tiny bit of organic matter here and there???? Spiral bound, with stiff card covers. Utterly beguiling! Beautiful drawing from the great Jack Dunkley.

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. One of the best and most nostalgic works on cooking. Just after WW2 - and with food rationing still in force - the Daily Mirror used its power to promote basic nutritional values and cooking in the average home. The result was this delightful vintage cookbook, with artwork for the excellent comic strips by the brilliant Jack Dunkley. Spiral bound so it lays flat, you will find vintage ads and basic well laid out sections. Life was tough but food could still be made more appealing. This is a good clean copy for its age, and is rarely found in such a good condition, without any former owner signs or any sauce scatterings. BRILLIANT and nostalgic, it is a wonderfully collectable recipe book with superb drawings. Language: eng Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng.
