Meditations "about God and living in joy," excerpted from the daily journals kept by the former Hollywood actor (remembered mostly for his roles in several of Universal's horror-film classics of the early 1930s, including DRACULA and THE MUMMY), who "walked away from the fame and riches of Hollywood to find his understanding of God and the universe" in the Mojave Desert, where he "wrote novels and studied religious and metaphysical writings from the East and West," fusing them into a personal philosophy that "combined elements of New Thought, (Unity, Religious Science, and Christian Science) with Zen, Taoism, and Buddhism." The book's introduction (about 33 pages) covers Manners's life and acting career, and discusses how he came to abandon showbiz for his spiritual life in the desert. Signed by Editor.

Writing - and often experimenting - in verse of great technical proficiency and range. Sándor Weöres uses primitive (and even invented) mythology to remind us of the far-off roots of our civilization. Nature and Hungarian folk-lore are very prominent in the prolific, passionate verses of Ferenc Juhász, a poet at odds with his time, who has nevertheless contributed to it some of its finest work.' ***'Penguin Modern European Poets is designed to present, in verse translations, the work of significant poets of this century for readers unfamiliar with the original languages. The series already includes Yevtushenko, Rilke, Apollinaire, Prévert, Quasimodo, a volume of Greek poets, Miroslav Holub, Zbigniew Herbert, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Günter Grass, Vasko Popa, Anna Akhmatova, and Eugenio Montale.' (Quotes taken from the back cover) ***A first printing of the true first edition, published as a paperback original, in its original card covers, in very nice condition. Softcover. Condition: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. Z : 24 x 31 cm, 128 pages, 59 color & 46 b/w illustrations. - Artists' book. American artist John Baldessari and film set designer Naomi Shohan created "PA" #3 presenting a unique combination: film stills from the outsider's view the artist's take on Hollywood and film stills from the insider's view the set designer who has worked on many major film productions such as "American Beauty," "Constantine," "The Replacement Killers," "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," as well as many others. They engage in a visual dialogue and play with juxtapositions, correspondences, and contrasts, which add new surprising, ironic, and witty dimensions and narrations to the images. The publication includes a conversation between John Baldessari and Naomi Shohan, moderated by Amy Cappellazzo, as well as texts by David Campany and Jessica Morgan.

From a band of rebel's to an organisation almost as important as the Post Office; from weekend patrols to full scale actions as colourful and as exciting as those carried out by the services; from a handful of conspirators to a force almost as public and as familiar as the police. Preventing rail smashes, encoutering strayed lions and escaped convicts, returning an elephant to its owner, rescuing from flood and fire - these services, as well as those that cope with puncture, breakdown, cold engine and collision, are only some of the subjects of the anecdotes and sidelong glances at our British way of life that make up this impressive and entertaining book. It is a readable, often amusing, but always fascinating story that David Keir and his distinguished contributors tell in this golden jubilee history of the Automobile Association - an organisation unique in our social history, one whose well known initials could stand for the Automobile Age itself. Illustrated. 240 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
