Add to basket13 hand-coloured aquatint roundels each mounted separately on card with printed text verso (diameter 6.6 cm), brief titles at foot of rectos, housed in original bronze medallion case, obverse with profile portrait of Wellington facing left, reverse with title 'Picture Medal' and allegorical depiction of Victory, signed "'Porter F.'" and "Orme Direx" verso signed "Edwd Orme Direx, Bond St. London"', engraved roundel title mounted to inside of both obverse and reverse, the whole contained in the original red morocco case titled in gilt "Record of British Military Valour". Originally issued with a short strip of cloth joining them together in a string, this set "as always" has lost its joints but is particularly clean and unaffected by the "usual" loss of small bits of text where the cloth was affixed. An uncommon set of aquatints commemorating Wellington's victory in the Peninsular War. They were later reissued in Jehoshaphat Aspin's Naval and Military Exploits (1820; see Abbey Life 350 and Tooley 71). Here in particularly good condition and with the rare leather case, complete with its original hinge and metal clasps. (Abbey Life 466.).

Add to basketSecond issue; folio (37.5 x 28 cm); 8 hand-coloured engraved plates, engraved portrait frontispiece (dated 1814), title and dedication leaves, 'MN Bibliotheque militaire' blue stamp on front free endpaper, frontispiece just starting to come away from stub, otherwise internally a fine copy; later red cloth, flat spine lettered in gilt, a touch of rubbing to extremities. A fresh copy of this handsome work containing eight Russian military uniforms during the Napoleonic Wars. This is the second issue of this work with the portrait dated 1814, instead of 1806 for the first issue. A fine collection of Russian military costumes. Colas suggests that the plates could be by Alexander Orlowski on stylistic grounds. The plates are as follows: 1. The Body Guard. 2. Foot Guards. 3. Chasseur Guards. 4. Guard at Night. 5. Infantry. 6. A Sailor. 7. A Soldier of the Police. 8. A Cossack. Colas 735; Lipperheide 1347.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First edition. Title page dated 1819. 365mm x 255mm approx. Cover very bumped and scuffed at corners and at top and bottom of spine. Plain brown thick board covers, much stained, with evidence that thin green leather binding still remaining on spine and board corners once extended over the whole of the boards. Gilt title on spine and five small gilt draped-urn symbols between double and triple lines as decoration also on spine. Front free end paper detached but extant - much creased. Rear free end paper also very creased but still attached. Brown paper tape repair to front hinge. Contains 40 beautiful vivid full-colour aquatints of naval and military scenes. Many of the tissue guards are still present, but not all, but most are foxed and sometimes creased or slightly torn. However, the illustrations themselves show only tiny spots of foxing, if any. Text pages are foxed at top and bottom, but the text itself is clear and clean. Several pages near the front of the book have been very discreetly strengthened/tidied with strips of similar-coloured paper tape pasted along the edges.

Half Morocco. Cloth boards. Condition: Near Fine. Second Issue. Large paper edition, seldom encountered. Folio, 46 by 33 cm. 4to. [4], 94, [4] pp. 40 hand-colored plates. The last two plates in Tooley's collation appear in this copy after the address along with four text pages, which are not numbered, as Tooley points out, and perhaps this is the reason for the misplacement. However, most importantly, all the plates and text are present. Tooley 353. The Second Issue is in all respects identical to the first issue of 1818 other than a few trivial details, of which the unnumbered pages is one. The issuance in 1819 belies when the plates themselves were engraved and colored. Watermarks on plates as early as 1815. As noted on the title, "Published to his Majesty, and to his Royal Highness the Prince Regent", and the illustrious list of subscribers, this was obviously intended as a spectacular commemoration of the then recent final, glorious triumph over Napoleon after a decade and a half struggle against him, and the result was a true tour-de-force, for few colored aquatint plates of the era match these for sheer drama and vividness! Spine with lovely decoration, including three vignette gilt figurative devices. Condition: LIght wear to the morocco, with trivial rubbing. Small abrasion (lifting of marbling) of FFEP. Small, non-decorative, ownership bookplate on FEP, in corner. Scattered, very light, foxing, never disconcerting, and cumulatively, a trivial cavil. Plates are all bright. Overall, a beautiful, and exciting, copy.

172 pp including index, quarto, 110 beautiful hand-coloured plates in fine fresh condition including the very desirable Australian supplement. Contemporary straight red grain morocco, all edges gilt. The scarce second edition of a famous work, in larger format - one of the most notable books from the golden age of the handcoloured illustrated book. Orme's Foreign Field Sports comprised the 100-plate main work, depicting European, African, Indian, and American hunting scenes, together with a supplement of ten handcoloured aquatint plates of Australian Aboriginal scenes. The plates in this supplement represent in vivid style and delicate detail various aspects of Aboriginal life in the bush. The plates are justly celebrated and are without question the most attractive and sympathetic of the early European depictions of the Aboriginal inhabitants.

Aquatint engraving, coloured by hand, by James Godby and Henri Merke (watermark: 'J. Whatman 1805'). A fine image from 'Orme's Collection of British Field Sports': "the finest and most important sporting book of the last two centuries" (Schwerdt) Samuel Howitt, "genius, artist, sportsman", concentrated his considerable artistic talents on picturing scenes of horse-racing and hunting in all its aspects. Born in Nottinghamshire, England, Howitt was largely self-taught ,"although he must have been helped by his companions George Morland, Rowlandson and John Raphael Smith. Howitt's watercolours of hunting, shooting and racing have delightful spontaneity. An enthusiastic sportsman himself, he had sufficient family money to paint at first only for his own and his friends pleasure. However, this fortune was quickly dissipated and Howitt moved to London. [He made a living], partly by etching at which he was extremely skilled. As an artist he was prolific, more than 150 of his designs were published in The Sporting Magazine. He illustrated Beckford's Thoughts on Hunting, and other books, including Orme's Collection of British Field Sports. The light touch of his pen, the delicacy of his brushwork and his experience of field sports ensured all that he drew was animated and accurate." (Charles Lane British Racing Prints pp.132-133). Cf. 4to., (14 x 11 2/8 inches). List of Subscribers. 40 fine hand-coloured aquatint plates. Contemporary half red morocco, gilt (extremities a bit scuffed). Later issue, first published between 1819. This was Orme's last great colour-plate book, after a successful career that began in 1794 when his brother Daniel published one of his engravings. By 1799 Orme had been appointed printseller in ordinary to George III and in 1820 editor of prints in ordinary to George IV. "In May 1800 he had a shop in Conduit Street, London (at the corner of George Street), and in 1801 exhibited a portrait at the Royal Academy. In the same year he established himself at 59 New Bond Street, London, at the corner of Brook Street, and published "Rudiments of Landscape", a volume of uncoloured etchings after his brother William's drawings. He advertised that he stocked 'Books of Instruction in every Branch of Drawing, and Drawing Materials'. Then began the publication of a series of coloured aquatint books, ending in 1819 with "Historic, Military, and Naval Anecdotes". Some separate engravings of London markets were issued in 1822, but in 1824 the shop was closed, and he concentrated on his new career" (John Maggs for DNB) as a property developer.
