Add to basketCloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Various (illustrator). A scarce early reprint of this illustrated work on the history of whipping and flogging, with the original unclipped pictorial dust wrapper. The fourth reprint of the work. This work was originally published in 1961 and was reprinted for the first time just three months later. With the original unclipped dust wrapper.Includes twenty-two monochrome plate illustrations, including depictions of 'Medieval Tortures' and of 'The Punishment of Titus Oates'. Collated complete. With five pages of the original publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work promoting titles of a similar nature.A scarce work, being very scarcely encountered with the original pictorial dust wrapper thus. This is an illustrated, global history of whipping, flagellation, and other related forms of corporal punishment which examines the pervasiveness of such practices throughout history. It includes detailed accounts of physical violence, as well as specific chapters on 'Pleasure, Pain, and Propitiation', 'Sadism and Masochism', and on the 'Physical, Sexual, and Psychological Effects of Whipping'. Full bound in the original publisher's paper wraps, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, very excellent with just slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities, in the latter's case, resulting in one fractional nick to the cloth. Wrapper is generally smart with light toning, rubbing, and edgewear, including small some closed tears. Internally, generally firmly bound with pages that are a trifle age toned, however generally bright and clean barring a few marginal handling marks. A near fine copy of the work with a very good dust wrapper, given its scarcity. Near Fine. book.
