Elvius som 1744 efterträdde Faggot som sekreterare i Svenska Wetenskaps Academien, reste sommaren 1748 på dess uppmaning i Östergötland och Västergötland, "fram och tillbaka till Trollhättan" för att undersöka förutsättningar för en kanal mellan Östersjön och Kattegatt. Han tillbringade slutet av sommaren i Trollhättan samman med Hårleman och på hemvägen dog han endast 40 år gammal. Hårleman tog på sig att ge ut "sin upriktige och käre wäns" dagbok som här föreligger i ett utmärkt rent och fräscht exemplar, bundet i ett vackert pappband med marmorerade överdragspapper och titel i guldtryck på svart skinn på ryggen.
