The book is protected in a removable Secol archival sleeve. Three short essays, compiled by Southern Railway of England for the Royal Jubilee and printed at The Curwen Press, which provide a guide for visiting tourists. The first, entitled 'The Beauty of Southern England', speaks of the chalk cliffs of Dover, the apple orchards of Kent, the South Downs and numerous other Literary connections by Mais, who was famous for his travel guides; the second, 'Social and Sporting Season', discusses Goodwood, cricket at the Oval and Lords, as well as other pastimes such as dances, fishing and bathing by the journalist Charles Graves (brother of Robert); and the final essay 'The Birthplace of English History' gives a run-down of Britain from the stone age to the 19th century, via the Battle of Hastings and Stonehenge. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. The sole UK printing published by the Kynoch Press, Birmingham in nd (1932). The BOOK is in Very Good+ condition. Original buff cloth printed in red with an illustration to upper cover. The boards are slightly splayed and a little darkened to the edges with some very… lightly rubbing in places. Some age related markings to the boards. The spine is toned and darkened but the red titling is legible but faded. A small dark mark to the upper spine tip. Internally, the previous owner has neatly penned entries on ten pages and on one page of the 'Notes' section' to the rear (see images). The book is protected in a removable Mylar cover. Ravilious provides a headpiece illustration at the beginning of every week, those at the beginning of the month in red and the others in black and white. The Kynoch Press was the in house printing division of I.C.I. and their notebooks were in effect diaries for the use of employees and customers. As well as all the company printing it executed independent fine printing, particularly under the aegis of Herbert Simon from 1922-33 when it commissioned several notable artists. The limitation is unknown but this is a very scarce title to find in any collectible condition, with less than a handful of copies having appeared at auction in the last 30 years. Free from inscriptions. Light spotting to the end-papers and mild toning to the text-block, otherwise internally very clean. 'The atrocities of the pirates : being a faithful narrative of the umparalleled sufferings endured by the author during his captivity among the pirates of the island of Cuba ; with an account of the excesses and barbarities of those inhuman freebooters, together with a copious and explicit report of his subsequent trial at the Old Bailey. Published in an edition thought to be 2,000 copies, High Street was never reprinted, as the original lithograph stones were destroyed during the Blitz when the Curwen Press premises in Plaistow, East London, received two direct hits. The Country Lif…e warehouse was also a victim of the London Blitz, hence the rarity of this publication. As a result of the bombing at that warehouse, copies of Mervyn Peake's Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor (1939) were also, famously, lost. Ravilious's beautiful and evocative book "had a long gestation, starting from an idea of Helen Binyon's [a contemporary of Ravilious at the Royal College of Art] for an alphabet of shops, but also resembling certain of the lithographed 'Père Castor' children's books from Paris that Ravilious collected, such as Faites votre marché, by Natalie Parin, of 1935, which was intended to be instructive as well as decorative. Ravilious deliberately looked for odd shops with special and often Victorian visual appeal" (Powers, p. 22). A review of the book in The Manchester Guardian noted "High Street. is in a category by itself. Mr. Eric Ravilious presents two dozen attractive coloured drawings of different kinds of shops, while Mr. J. M.
