Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. "The Art of Thomas Hardy" was written by Lionel Johnson, himself an English poet and literary scholar. This edition of the book (the Second) has a handsome frontispiece portrait of Hardy drawn by Vernon Hill, and has an added chapter titled "The Poetry of Thomas Hardy" by…J. E. Barton, which is graced by a beautiful, real etching of Hardy by William Strang . The book, which was published in 1923 by John Lane the Bodley Head in London, also includes the valuable reference work "Thomas Hardy : A Bibliography of the of First Editions - 1865 - 1922" , contributed by John Lane, the publisher. This being the Second Edition of the book, Lane had revised the bibliography to reflect just the First Editions, which covered some titles not treated by the 1894 edition. It is a generous and lengthy bibliography. Lionel Johnson was a well-respected poet in his own right, and a literary scholar esteemed for his astuteness. Now known as 'The Dark Angel', Johnson was in the thick of literary society in England, being a member of the famous Rhymers Club, started by William Butler Yeats and Ernest Rhys. The book has, on its front paste-down, a handsome personal book plate that was obviously designed for the owner (Edith Ellsworth Kinsley). The plate, printed in black, with heavy black borders features figures in a rugged, hilly landscape with a waterfall - all done in an Expressionistic style. TITLE : The Art of Thomas Hardy by Lionel Johnson - To Which is Added a Chapter on the Poetry by J. E. Barton and a bibliography by John Lane - Together with a new Portrait by Vernon hill and the Etched Portrait by William Strang. AUTHORS : Lionel Johnson (1867 - 1902) ; J. E. Barton (Joseph Erwin Barton, 1875 - 1959) ; John Lane (1854 - 1925) INTRODUCTION (Publisher's Note, dated 1923) : John Lane PREFACE : Lionel Johnson (1892) [ADDENDUM] : "William Barnes, A Biographical Note" - by Thomas Hardy (Reprinted from "The Athenæum", October 16, 1886) IMPRINT : John Lane the Bodley Head PLACE : London DATE 1923 EDITION : Second Edition, Revised STATUS : Op — Out of Print DETAILS : Trade hardcover; contains two portrait illustrations of Thomas Hardy - one a reproduction of a pencil drawing by Vernon Hill (the frontispiece), and the other an etching by William Strang (fronting the chapter by J. E. Barton); contains a Publisher's Note (Introduction), the Author's Preface, and a sizeable Bibliography of Hardy's First Editions ; [xvi] + 357 pages; 5" x 7 1/2" (12mo) olive green, cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering and line embellishments on spine, blind-stamped line borders on front board, and rear board blank; top edge of text-block trimmed - fore-- and bottom edges untrimmed. Top edge dyed brown. CONDITION - VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book which remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR : The spine extremities are compressed, and display a touch of abrasion, with fraying just starting; gilt on spine is bright; joints are mildly rubbed; board surfaces display mild surface rub and one small patch of scuff (on the rear board); board tips are softly bumped; bottom board edges have mild shelf rub; top edge of text-block somewhat dulled, displaying modest rub; fore- and bottom edges toned. BINDING : The book has been read, and is therefore not as tight as when issued, opening easily and widely, however no leaves are detached or loose, the whole remaining fairly solid. INTERIOR : The end-papers are unavoidably toned; the paper throughout is mildly toned. There are a few scattered instances of foxing and small tea-stains, but these are not egregious in effect. There is the aforementioned bookplate on the front paste-down, else there is no marking or writing in the book. The two illustrations display nicely. William Strang (Etched Portrait of Thomas Hardy) (illustrator).
