First published in 1757, this is an attractive copy of this little atlas containing a double-hemisphere world map dated 1760 showing the incomplete coastlines of Australia and New Zealand; maps of Europe, France, Africa, Asia; and North and South America. With a long chapter on America which after giving a brief history of its discovery continues with descriptions of the territories claimed by Britain, Denmark, Spain, Holland, Portugal, Prussia; "l'Amerique independant" including California, the Amazon, and "Terre-Magellanique"; and France, including New France (in Canada) and Louisiana. There is also an account of the "Terres Australes vers le Pole Antarctique" which mention New Guinea, New Holland, Papua, and Carpentaria. Expilly was a member of the Societe Royal de Belles-Lettres de Nancy, held a number of government posts throughout his life which enabled him travel widely gathering information on population, climate and topography which he compiled in several geographical titles related to France and the rest of the world.
