The very scope of the topic is thus so daunting that it is tempting to treat it only at one stratum of this hierarchy, be it the biophysics of phospholipid bilayers or the biochemistry of interactions at the cell surface. Such an approach is entirely valid, particularly among specialists with common interests. However, this approach does present a distorted perspective to the newcomer to the field, and, more significantly, it fails to stimulate cross fertil ization of ideas among workers at the various disciplinary levels. For example, as in all areas of molecular biology, the clinicians are frequently unaware of the contributions to their problems that might be made by the application of more basic knowledge and techniques. Conversely, biochemists or biophysicists may be ignorant of the existing practical problems to which they might address their expertise.

When the Commonwealth Government assented to the War Precautions Act in 1914, it was decided that people who were of German origin or descent, as well as those from countries allied with Germany, might be a security risk, and so places had to be found to detain them. At first people were detained in army barracks or training camps but the government soon realised they would need more permanent accommodation and set up camps in specific locations, one of these being the German Concentration Camp at Holsworthy in the Liverpool district. Vorwort Psychische Störungen alter Menschen sind ein zentrales Thema der Nervenheilkunde, dessen Bedeutung aufgrund demographischer Veränderungen weiter zunehmen wird. In diesem Band sind grundlegende und krankheitsbezogene Beiträge versammelt, deren Autoren in den letzten Jahren großenteils durch eigene Forschungsarbeiten zu diesen Themen hervorgetreten sind. Praktisch wichtige gerontopsychiatrische Erkrankungen werden im allgemeinen und im speziellen Teil des Buches unter verschiedenen Blickwinkeln behandelt. Die Darstellung der Krankheitsbilder folgt dabei Leitlinien der zehnten Revision der Internationalen Klassifikation psychischer Störungen (ICD-10). Auch aktuellere Aspekte, die noch keinen Eingang in die ICD-10 fanden, sind berücksichtigt.
