First Edition. [Trial]. Fairfield, Letitia C.B.E., M.D. (Editor). Fullbrook, Eric P. (Editor). Trial of John Thomas Straffen. London, Edinburgh, Glasgow: William Hodge and Company, Limited. [1954]. Notable British Trials Series Volume 80. xiii, 299 pp. Complete with 15 illustrated plates and two folding plates (maps/plans). Title page printed in red and black. Original red cloth with gilt stamped spine, very good, in worn dust jacket. Previous owner's inscription on front free endpaper. $65. * First edition. A landmark study in the intersection of criminal law and forensic psychiatry. It provides a definitive record of the man who forced a re-evaluation of how the British legal system treats the "feeble-minded" offender. After killing two young girls, Straffen was found "unfit to plead" and committed to Broadmoor. However, his subsequent escape-lasting only a few hours-led to the murder of a third child and ignited a national debate over the "M'Naghten Rules" and the legal definition of insanity. Edited in part by the pioneering physician and lawyer Dr. Letitia Fairfield, this volume provides an expert medical-legal lens on Straffen's mental state. It is an indispensable resource for historians of British criminology, collectors of the Hodge series, and those interested in the evolution of the insanity defense.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Item Description The Trial of Peter Barnes and Others The I.R.A. Coventry Explosion of 1939; edited by Letitia Fairfield, C.B.E., M.D., Barrister-at-Law; William Dodge and Company Limited, London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, 1953. First publication. Notable British Trials Series Volume 77. From the blurb The arraignment of Peter Barnes and four others on a charge of murder at the Birmingham Assizes on 11th December, 1939, provided the most important, and most controversial, trial of any held during that year of persons charged with I.R.A. activities in Britain. At 2;30p.m. on 25th August, 1939, a bomb exploded in one of Coventry's busiest streets. Broadgate, killing 5 people, injuring some 60 others, and causing much damage. The accused were charged with the death of one person, and it was clearly proved that the bomb had been made at the house of one of them, and taken away in a carrier cycle. During 1939 many acts of sabotage were carried out by members of the Irish Republican Army, but fortunately only two other cases had fatal results. Barnes and Richards were convicted and executed; the others were acquitted. The trial is a fine example of how a case should be presented, and was eminently fair in the way it was conducted under English law. At the conclusion of the case the presiding judge congratulated the police on the excellence of their work. The book is illustrated with black-and-white photographs and has a fold-out street plan of Coventry. This book, 289 pages, is in very-good condition in a very-good dust jacket that is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap.
