Hardcover. Condition: Good. First edition. Small quarto. Quarter cloth and papercovered boards with printed label. Modest stains on the spine, some light tidemarks on the front board and on the edge of the first couple of leaves, else a sound good or better copy lacking the dust jacket, but with all plates and maps present. Inscribed by Robert J. Flaherty to the film director, screenwriter, and producer Paul Bern: "To Paul Bern with the good wishes of the author, Robert Flaherty. New York City. Jan. 4th, 1927." Bern was Irving Thalberg's personal assistant and considered one of the great talents in Hollywood, but his fate was unfortunate, related by Kenneth Anger in his scandalous book *Hollywood Babylon*. Bern died by his own hand just two months after marrying the Hollywood bombshell Jean Harlow. Anger attributed Bern's suicide to his impotence, but others surmised he was murdered by an abandoned common-in-law wife, with the studio covering up the scandal to protect their biggest star. This book documents several of Flaherty's trips to the Hudson Bay area, which were the basis for the ultra-influential 1922 film *Nanook of The North*, generally regarded as the first feature-length documentary. Bern had an extensive library; many of his books fell into the possession of his friend and fellow MGM producer Carey Wilson, from whose estate this came. A terrific association connecting two important early Hollywood figures.

First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the title page, "To Jack Beddington via John Grierson -horn blower and then some! With all good wishes, Cafe Royal, London, August 7 - 1938". An excellent association linking one of the pioneers of documentary film with one of its most notable patrons. The author, Robert Flaherty, is best known for his 1922 film, Nanook of the North, and is regarded, along with his close friend, John Grierson, as one of the fathers of documentary film. As publicity director at Shell and BP, Jack Beddington had commissioned John Betjeman's Shell Country Guides and been responsible for the famous poster campaigned that had commissioned work from Paul Nash, Ben Nicholson, McKnight Kauffer, Edward Bawden, and Rex Whistler, among others. He also produced films through the Shell Film Unit, established on Grierson's recommendation and quickly recognized for the imaginative style of its projects. During the war he became director of the Ministry of Information's Film Division, focusing on the production of documentary films but also enabling the making of feature films like One of Our Aircraft is Missing, A Canterbury Tale, and A Matter of Life and Death. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine in black, map front endpapers. With dust jacket. Spine rolled, loss of size from boards, spotting to edges of contents. A good copy in the rubbed and browned jacket with a chip from the head of the spine panel affecting the title and two tape repairs to the verso.
