With the Foyles sticker that guarantees its signature, this is the finest possible edition to buy for the collector. UK first edition, first printing hardback (complete number line) in a protected unclipped dustjacket. "Beautiful, intelligent and wealthy, Ivana Lowell seemed to have it all. Part of the Guinness dynasty, her family were glamorous and well-connected. Her charismatic but spoilt grandmother Maureen had made an excellent marriage with the Lord of Dufferin and Avon and was a leader of the fashionable set in her youth. Her mother, the writer Caroline Blackwood, socialised with the most glitteringly bohemian and high-profile figures of New York and London. Caroline had intense love affairs and was married to the painter Lucian Freud and the talented composer Israel Citkowitz before finally settling down with the poet Robert Lowell. However, being born into the Guinness inheritance was not the blessing that it appeared to be. Ivana's life of glamour and high-living has been marked by tragedy and loss. Like her brilliant but troubled mother, she has been plagued by an addiction to alcohol which took root when she was still a self-conscious schoolgirl. Having survived a childhood accident which left her physically scarred and the instability of a frenetic home life, she is also faced with the discovery of a secret which threatens to undermine her entire past. This frank and witty memoir is both vibrant and sad. It is laced with anecdotes and familiar names from the 1940s to the present, but it is ultimately an account of the relationship between mother and daughter, the story of two women whose deep affection for each other withstands everything that life has to throw at them" - SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR Language: eng Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng. Add to basketSee the entries for Angus Wilson and Christina Foyle in the Oxford DNB. 'Dolly' is clearly the 'Mrs. A. G. Dowdeswell' who was secretary of the Johnson Society of London in the 70s and 80s (arranging luncheons) and named as a member of the Johnson Society at least as late as 1992. The recipient Philip Dosse was proprietor of Hansom Books, publisher of a stable of seven arts magazines including Books and Bookmen and Plays and Players. See 'Death of a Bookman' by the novelist Sally Emerson (editor of 'Books and Bookmen' at the time of Dosse's suicide), in Standpoint magazine, October 2018. The present item is 2pp, 4to. Forty-seven lines of text. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Possibly related, the pair were at least on a level of intimacy. Addressed to 'My dear Philip' and signed 'With love, / Dolly.' She reminds him that she 'sat next to Simon Young of John Murray at the b & b Dorchester luncheon' [for the twenty-fifth anniversary of 'Books and Bookmen'], and that 'he indicated that he was desirous of doing some more reviewing'. She lists five of his interests, adding 'a little nebulous, but he is apparently quite a bod at John Murray (493 4361) and has been masterminding series on flying and sailing there for many years. I went round the drawing rooms and saw the Byron relics in Albemarle Street last week. He is very pleasant.' She was present at 'the next Literary Luncheon for Sir Angus Wilson last week. It was a success and Angus was in good form and pleased with both honours. After luncheon, (a better one) he suddenly dashed round the end of the top table and made a dive for me. He had an animated conversation for quite a few minutes while Melvyn Bragg was waiting to kick off. He didn't dive for anyone else and my table 8 were over-awed, so I was told. My husband and I have known him for thirty years or so. We never pushed our knowledge of him, but he has always called himself a friend and on many occasions has made a point of deliberately seeking us out. I must tell you that the room was not half so full as for your 25th anniversary. I think his new novel not his best.' She has been in London for five days, and names an eye surgeon she wished to consult, 'but six weeks must elapse before he can see me so I shall try to fix it for the time of my Lichfield visit'. She is glad Dosse has got Ian Jack to review 'Dictionary Johnson'. 'I wonder if you have had a copy of Johnson's Dictionary, a £45 facsimile from Times Books Ltd? I am also pleased that Lady Huntingdon will do C. H. Rolph's "London Particulars" and Nigel Nicolson is in good form.'.

Add to basketThis prospectus is a scarce item: no other copy has been traced. A 4to bifolium, with four unnumbered pages printed in red. Somewhat aged and worn, with a horizontal strip of light discoloration at the head of the cover, which has the title and author's name surrounded by a border made up of Tenniel's illustrations, beneath this is a quotation from Dodgson's poetry and the price of '7/6 net'. Across the middle two pages is the heading 'The Centenary "Life of Lewis Carroll"'. The text begins by explaining that Reed has made use of Dodgson's letters to Ellen Terry. Later on comes the paragraph: 'Mr. Langford Reed is well-known for his books of Nonsense Tales and Verses, based upon the humorous writings of Carroll, and so well has he acquitted himself with this new work, that he proves that he is the undoubted authority on his subject - the man of two well-defined lives - as the Reverend C. L. Dodgson and as Lewis Carroll.' Details of the books specifications are on the recto of the second leaf, and on its verso is the order form. See Image.

Add to basketFrom the Macqueen-Pope papers. (See his entry, and those of Foyle and Mackenzie, in the Oxford DNB.) Apart from damage and rust staining from paperclips, the seven items are in good condition. The correspondence mainly concerns a Foyles Literary Lunch for Macqueen-Pope, which Mackenzie was unable to chair because of an attack of bronchitis. All items 1p, 8vo. Mackenzie's two letters signed 'Compton Mackenzie' and Foyle's signed 'Christina Foyle'. ONE: Foyle to MP, 26 February 1951. She is forwarding a letter from Mackenzie. 'I am still receiving letters from people who were at the luncheon, saying how tremendously they enjoyed it.' TWO: Carbon of typed letter from Mackenzie to Foyle, 25 February 1951. Copy made by MP of the letter referred to in Item One. He thanks her for 'the lovely flowers and for being so understanding about my having to let you down. Not appearing when I am billed to appear is for me the most unpleasant experience I can suffer [.] I hated having to surrender. But I couldn't have stood up and my voice had gone [.] Would you be very kind and let MacQueen-Pope now how distressed I was not being able to take the Chair for him. He is a particularly nice fellow and has done such a lot of good work.' THREE and FOUR: Carbons of typed letters from MP to Foyle and Mackenzie, both dated 28 February 1951. To Mackenzie he writes: 'We missed you. The gentleman wh deputized was anything but the ideal Chairman, which you most certainly would have been. In your absence it devolved on me to receive the guests and one lady informed me - addressing me as Mr. Mackenzie - that she had now achieved the ambition of her life.' FIVE: CM to MP, 1 March 1951. 'I am still pretty bad - bronchitis having succeeded the 'flu'. I am hoping to be able to read A Book at Bedtime in a fortnight's time.' SIX: Carbon of typed letter from MP to CM. He sympathizes with the bronchitis: 'my wife has been a martyr to it'. He is enclosing a copy of the programme: 'It makes nostalgic reading - especially as regards the prices and the reference to chops and steaks always ready. Keep it if it is any use to you - or throw it aways after a smile. I have another.' SEVEN: CM to MP. 'Your note has just been forwarded to me. Many thanks for your generous contribution. We have just passed £3700 which is not bad in these hard times.'.
