The rich colour palette we are presented with in Trietto 4 is a characteristic of Francis's work which he viewed as the result of the union of imagination and nature. His expert knowledge of colour sequencing, together with his skilful colour manipulation during the printmaking process creates a sense of harmony in his prints that almost seems fantastical. Ruth E. Fine, art historian and former curator of modern prints at National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., says that to look at Francis's prints is like 'riding on a magic carpet. Voyaging in his world, his galaxies, his space, his time'.

Add to basketMonotype in colours, 1982, on handmade paper, signed by the artist in pencil, a unique impression, 198.5 x 108.5 cm. (78¼ x 42¾ in.) The work of Sam Francis has not followed a straight line of progression. He generated new forms, colours and formats with every piece, constantly adding to his large visual vocabulary. This unique monotype is exemplary of his artistic language, demonstrating his skillful manipulation of colour hues and blending amongst the transparent layers. His large red woodblock impressions against the white of the paper highlights his need to work with opposites, a direct result of his interest in Oriental philosophy. This monotype, with its spontaneous spots, splatters and stains cannot be replicated, mimicking a painterly language, which was ultimately ground-breaking within the context of printmaking as Francis broke down the boundaries of what the medium can and cannot achieve.
