Collation: [asterisk]8 2[asterisk]2, A-Z8, Aa-Ii8, Kk-Xx4 (= 314 leaves; Tt3 signed Tt5; blank Xx4). First edition of this popular manual to be edited by Hendrik Hoogeveen. "The Jesuit François Vigier, or Vigerus, of Rouen [1590-1647] broke the ordinary Jesuit tradition of the predominant study of Latin by producing a work on the principal idioms of Greek" (Sandys). Remarkable for its longevity, this guide was originally published at Paris by Sébastien Cramoisy in 1627, and quickly became a standard text; the series of augmented editions prepared by Hermann carried it well into the nineteenth century. The author was professor of humanities and rhetoric at Bourges and Paris, and edited a Latin translation with commentary of the Preparatio Evangelica of Eusebius.
