The work is divided into three principal sections: I. Bibliographie der Bibliographie; II. Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften (including archaeology and related humanities); and III. Exakte und Naturwissenschaften, Angewandte Wissenschaften. It concludes with extensive subject and author indexes. The volume opens with a memorial notice by Franz Hodes recording the death of Hanns Bohatta (1866-1947), the distinguished Viennese librarian and bibliographer, who died on 30 October 1947 before the work could be completed. Best known as the co-author, with Michael Holzmann, of the Deutsches Anonymenlexikon and Deutsches Pseudonymenlexikon, Bohatta had devoted many years to the preparation of this reference work, which Hodes completed in his memory. The foreword places the bibliography within the tradition established by Petzholdt, Vallée, Stein, and Georg Schneider, while also recounting the considerable wartime difficulties encountered during its preparation, including the serious injury of collaborator Walter Funk during military service, after which Hodes assumed responsibility for bringing the project to completion. Designed to provide systematic access to bibliographies across every branch of scholarship, the work catalogues bibliographical reference tools by discipline rather than by individual subject. An important twentieth-century bibliographical reference work, indispensable for librarians, bibliographers, and researchers seeking historical subject bibliographies across the humanities, sciences, and applied disciplines.
