An den namentlich nicht genannten Museumsdirektor, Regierungsrat und Schriftsteller August Schricker (18381912): Durch unseren Freund, Baron Hornstein, erhielt ich Ihr Opernbuch Bertha die Spinnerin' zugesandt, welches ich mit nicht geringem Interesse gelesen habe [.] Der ganze romantische Grundton d…es Stücks ist der Musik sehr günstig, und der volle lyrische Klang, den die Diktion an geeigneter Stelle anschlägt, nicht minder. Ganz besonders hübsch finde ich den Ton der Jagd-Scene u. s. w. getroffen, wo Sie vermutlich alten Mustern gefolgt sind. Das ist alles sehr frisch u. eigenthümlich u. würde mich gleich zur Komposition locken, säße ich nicht bis an den Hals in angefangenen Arbeiten, so daß es leichtsinnig wäre, mit neuen Stoffen zu liebäugeln [.]". Holstein studierte Kontrapunkt bei Moritz Hauptmann und nahm Klavierunterricht bei Ignaz Moscheles; nach Aufenthalten in Rom, Berlin und Paris übernahm er in Leipzig die Leitung der Bach-Gesellschaft und war Gründungsmitglied des Bach-Vereins. Neben Opern schrieb er Ouvertüren, eine Kantate, kammermusikalische Werke und Klavierstücke; einen hervorragenden Ruf genoß er als Liedkomponist. In Leipzig gründete er das sog. Holstein-Stift, eine Stiftung zur Unterstützung unbemittelter Musikschüler. August Schricker war als Geistlicher in Bayern und hernach als Redakteur der Schwäbischen Volkszeitung" tätig, gründete die Sonntagsblätter der deutschen Partei" und gab die illustrierte Wochenschrift Kriegszeitung" heraus; zudem war Schricker Senatssekretär der Universität Straßburg. Bericht von Probenarbeiten an der Leipziger Oper, von dem großen Erfolg seiner Oper "Die Hochländer" in Braunschweig, vvon dem Abt geschrieben habe: " . daß man sie wenigstens 8 Mal im Winter geben werde, seh…r viel für Braunschweig", wünscht sich den Freund für die Hauptrolle des Reginald; ferner schreibt er "ganz.im Vertrauen" von seinem Zwist mit Pollini, dem Direktor der Hamburger Oper. - F. F. von Holstein verfaßte die Libretti seiner Opern selbst; außerdem war er Leiter der Bach-Gesellschaft in Leipzig; er starb etwa ein halbes Jahr nach diesem Brief (vgl. ADB 13, S. 1 f.). - Franz Wilhelm Abt (1819-1885), Komponist, seit 1853 Hofkapellmeister in Braunschweig (ADB 45, S. 686 f.); Bernhard Pollini (eigtl. Baruch Pohl, 1838-1897), Tenor, Intendant, seit 1874 Direktor der Hamburger Oper, seit 1876 auch Leiter des Altonaer Stadttheaters.
