Most smaller photos are numbered in ne…gative; five are also captioned and signed "G. Berggren" in negative. Twenty-six large photos are captioned and signed in negative: twenty-one by "G. Berggren," four by "Abdullah Frères" and one by "Sebah & Joailler.". Period brown half morocco album with cloth boards; spine with raised bands; gilt-lettered title "Turquie" on brown labels mounted on the front board and the spine; marbled endpapers. Binding slightly rubbed on extremities and worn on hinges, mounts slightly waved and age-toned, but overall a very good album of strong interesting photos. Attractive collection of large panoramic and close-up views of Istanbul and its environs, as well as portraits of Turkish people taken by noted local studios of Guillaume Berggren, Abdullah Frères and Jean-Pascal Sebah (1872-1947) and Polycarpe Joailler (1848-1904). The album opens with eighteen smaller portraits (mostly by G. Berggren), showing Turkish elders, women, a water seller, a porter, a cook, a Persian merchant, a Montenegrin, and an Orthodox Greek priest. The large photos include excellent views of Sultan Ahmed (Blue) Mosque, Dolmabahce Palace (entrance gate), Beyazit Square, Topkapi Palace (an entrance in the inner courtyard), the Fountain of Sultan Ahmed III, Hagia Sophia (general view, the entrance gate), Taksim Military Barracks, Mihrisan Valide Sultan Fountain, Beylerbeyi Palace, Galata Tower, the Serpent Column, ruins of the Palace of the Porphyrogenitus, the Walls of Istanbul, Lykos/Bayrampasa Valley, the Aqueduct of Valens, Bayezid II Mosque, Turkish cemetery, elaborate marble arabesques decorating buildings, general views of the Istanbul Historical Peninsula, Galata and the Golden Horn, &c. There are also lively scenes and portraits with Turkish cobblers, street barbers and their clients, men smoking hookah, women from a harem on a countryside outing, porters, shoemakers, &c. Period full-cloth album with marbled endpapers. Binding worn, album leaves with upward curling, occasional tears along the edges, but otherwise a very good album with strong, interesting photos. An interesting extensive collection of large albumen prints of Egypt taken by some of the most renowned early photographers of the region, including the Zangaki brothers, Pascal Sebah, Luigi Fiorillo, the Abdullah Freres, Antonio Beato, Hippolyte Arnoux, Gabriel Lekegian, and Maison Bonfils. The album contains ninety-four studio photographs, with about twenty excellent portraits of local settlers. The photos vividly portray Egyptian messengers, water carriers, porters, beggars, and guards, as well as Fellahin women in burqas carrying water jars or balancing vegetables on their heads. Especially interesting are several candid urban scenes showing wheat & date harvesting, a cargo of clay pots on the banks of the Nile, a camel caravan crossing the Suez Canal via a chain ferry, European travelers posing atop camels, etc. There's also a lively street scene on Sultan Hussein Quay in Port Said, with clearly visible locals, horse carts, and shop signs reading "The Eastern Telegraph Co.," "Henry's, King & Co.," "Thos. Cook & Son," and "Bank of Egypt Limited." Other photographs mostly show panoramic views and iconic landmarks in Cairo (the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, the Gezirah Palace, the Obelisk of Heliopolis, Giza Palace, and the Tombs of the Caliphs, etc.); Port Said (waterfront scenes, the Dutch House, Franz Joseph Quay with its lighthouse, and the Square of Ferdinand de Lesseps); Alexandria (the Mahmudiyya Canal, Ras El Tin Palace, Pompey's Pillar, an Egyptian artillery position in the al-Maqs area, destroyed during the 1882 British bombardment); Gaza (the Great Sphinx and general views of the Pyramids); Saqqara (the Step Pyramid of Djoser and the interior of the Mastaba of Mereruka); Abydos (Temple of Osiris); Philae (Temple of Isis); Abu Simbel (Great Temple of Ramesses); Luxor (Luxor Temple, general view); and Guirgueh (general view). Size approx. 200 x 280 mm. 18 of the photographs are signed by Zangaki, 4 by Sébah, 5 by Legekian, 6 by Bonfils, 3 by Beato, 3 by Arnoux and 1 by Abdoullah. M…ost are numbered and with a title caption in the negative. Two unsigned pictures seem to be of a much earlier date. A complete list of the pictures, with photo number and title captions, in format Excell, can be had upon e-mail request (we don't send pictures, but of the outside of the album). The photographs don't show any fading or soiling. The album with the photographs is in near pristine state. Most of these albums were bound in the oblong format. An in-folio album in this size and this fine condition is very rare. We calculate an approx. price of 80 Euro per picture. The pictures show a variety of views : the Canal of Suez , with identified ships, Port Said, the piramides, the Sphinx, Abou Simbel, Alexandria, Karnak, crocodile hunting.
