Brochure de 67 pages. (16 x 24 cm). Broché. Couverture imprimée. Titre rouge. Papier bruni. Pliures d'usage. Soft cover. Condition: Good. 8vo (23 cm), XI, 386, [2] pp. Untrimmed in printed wrappers (wrappers frayed at extremities and discolored; part of paper missing on the spine; paper slightly age-toned; few marginal pencil notes). Ferdinand Gonseth (1890-1975) was a Swiss mathematician, philosopher of science, and historian of ideas. He is remembered for his contributions to the philosophy of mathematics, particularly his emphasis on the historical and contextual development of mathematical knowledge, and for founding the doctrine of l'idonéisme, which influenced 20th-century discussions on the epistemology of mathematics and science. This is the first edition of Gonseth's major philosophical work, in which he addresses the crisis in the foundations of mathematics. The text is organized in eighteen densely argued chapters, beginning with the paradoxes of language and the construction of reality, and proceeding through the nature and foundations of geometry, arithmetic, and logic. Gonseth critically examines antinomies and the structure of formal systems before presenting a detailed exposition of the axiomatic method. The volume concludes with a discussion of l'idonéisme, Gonseth's original philosophical doctrine proposing that mathematical and scientific concepts are neither purely a priori nor purely empirical, but constitute continually improving, contextually adequate approximations of reality. The work is distinguished by its sophisticated synthesis of mathematical rigor and philosophical reflection, firmly situating Gonseth at the intersection of logic, epistemology, and the philosophy of science.…

Near Fine. First Edition of Gonseth's address to the Reunion Internationale des Mathematiciens in Paris, 1937, prior to its appearance in Bulletin de la Societe Mathematique de France, Vol. 67 the following year. Gonseth (1890-1795) was a swiss mathematician and philosopher. He sets out the axiomatic method as a way of mathematical thinking, in three movements: absence and necessity of a method, its historical recovery, and the sketch of a method of his own while reflecting in his own annotations.
