April 1720 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Frankreich) war ein französischer Lieutenant-général und Schriftsteller schottischer Herkunft.Bekannt ist er für seine «Mémoires du comte de Grammont», die Memoiren seines Schwagers Philibert de Gramont, die er 1713 in London anonym veröffentlichte und die ein lebhaftes Bild vom Hofleben, besonders auch von den amourösen Eskapaden und Skandalen, im 17. Jahrhundert zeichnen. Sie wurden u. a. 1866 in Paris von Sainte-Beuve neu herausgegeben. Il fournit à quatre-vingts ans à son beau-frère Antoine Hamilton le matériau de ses Mémoires. Une fois ceux-ci écrits, il vendit le manuscrit pour 1500 francs. Fontenelle, censeur de la presse, refusa de laisser paraître un ouvrage où les défauts de Grammont étaient si crûment exposés, mais Grammont, pour ne pas perdre ses 1500 francs, intervint auprès du censeur et leva l'interdiction.

A vivid account of the licentious court of Charles II, ostensibly the Memoirs of Philbert, Comte de Grammont (1621-1707), A Gascon nobleman, who had served in the French army but was exiled and fled to the English court, from 1662-64, attending again in 1670, 1671, 1676 and 1688 (James II). He dictated his account of his early life, at the age of eighty, to his brother-in-law, Anthony (Antoine) Hamilton (1646-1720), who is considered the principal author of the Memoirs. Hamilton, a Roman Catholic, was born in Ireland and spent much of his early life in France, later serving with the forces of James II in Ireland, 1689-90. The work was first published in French as the Mémoires and in English in 1714, with many later editions following. This copy, in a handsome Riviere binding, was owned by Arthur Stuart Beazley of Bethersden (1884-1984), member of the Kent Archaeological Society.
