[4], 148pp, half title. 8vo. Rather foxed, repair along leading edge of one leaf. Nineteenth century library blind stamp to title & half title. Bound in recent drab paper wrappers. 'It is only a step, for example, from the assumption that "the author" is present on the scene described in the poem to the further assumption that the poem was actually written in a churchyard. This step was first taken in an anonymous pamphlet, A Criticism on the Elegy, which has been attributed to one John Young. This essay, published in 1783, contains the remarkable dictum that 'though an Elegy may be written in a Church-yard, as well as in a closet, and in a Country Church-yard even better than in a Town one; yet courtesy itself must pronounce it fantastical, if an Elegy is to be written, to chuse out a place for writing it, where the conveniences for that operation are a wanting, and where even the common implements either exist not at all, or exist by premeditation.' ref: F.H. Ellis. Gray's Elegy: The Biographical Problem in Literary Criticism. 1951.…

A few notes have been added to the preface to this edition, but otherwise it is not easy to suggest a reason why it should have been reprinted in Edinburgh 27 years after its original appearance in London. 8vo, pp. [iii]-xx, 90; wanting the half title; and title page very dust-soiled; disbound. First edition. The preface spins a tale about how the 'editor' discovered this work on waste-sheets which had been used to wrap up some books ordered from Ireland (that is, books at a much cheaper rate than he would have to pay if bought in England), and he suggests that they might be part of Johnson's original criticism of Gray's Elegy, 'but afterwards withdrawn'. Imitation of Johnson, which would be hard (and, I think, pointless) to maintain over nearly a hundred pages, is occasionally successful: 'Of poets who had wrought on the subject before him, either incidentally or from purpose, he seems to have followed no one completely as a model, but to have gathered occasionally from all' (pp. 5-6). I am not clear who this John Young was: the preface is signed from Lincoln's Inn, 15 January 1783, so he may have been a barrister but that too could be a blind. Northup 1031.…
