Robert places great emphasis on sketching in the field and his watercolours are frequently "plein air"; this approach ensures paintings of vitality and authenticity. Elected a Member of the Society of Wildlife Artists [SWLA] in 1981 and has played an active part in the Society ever since. The following year he was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists.
