Decorative Cloth. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. First American Edition. From the recently auctioned collection of M. B. Goldstone--with his penciled signature to the front free endpaper. A superb fine copy in copper colored cloth with elaborate gilt decorations and lettering to the front board and spine. Solid gilt top edge and handcut paper. This is the special edition limited to 250 numbered copies--this being copy 84. This copy is in near mint condition--with the appearance of never being opened or read--some very mild soiling to the back cloth board--otherwise as new as the day it was published. Guelette originally published his tales in France in the early 18th Century and he died in 1768. This special edition is embellished with etchings and photogravures--all protected by the original tissue guards.

Full-Leather. Condition: Good. No Jacket. No Edition Stated. two 18th century novels bound in one, published as volume 5 of The Novelists' Magazine, published by Harrison and co, illustrated. Presumably contemporary full calf, hinges cracked, held by the cords, text block tight but with some foxing, text is in the form of two columns to the page. The 'magazine' was started in 1780, and lasted until 1788, in all consisting of 23 volumes. It sold weekly in parts, priced 6d, and the production values are clearly lower than the more pricy 18th C. norm. The illustrator was Thomas Stothard, and the engraver was James Heath. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Binding is complete and good, one page section is slightly loosened. No Foxing, frontispiece is grubby. A limited edition, being one of only six hundred and eighty copies.In the publisher's original gilt cloth.This collection of tales was edited by Leonard C. Smithers, and was first published in 1715 under the title 'Mille et un Quarts D'Heure, Contest Tartares', written by Thomas Simon Gueulette. The tales are described as being lively, entertaining and ingenious imitations of 'The Arabian Nights'. In the publisher's original cloth. Externally very smart with fading to the spine, a slight lean, bumping to the extremities, marks to the boards, and slight chipping to the head and tail of the spine. Internally firmly bound with lightly age toned pages with the odd spot to the front. Very Good. book.

Contemporary calf, raised & gilt banded spine, dark green morocco label. This is the first edition of the two works published together thus, although they were both included in the three volume Tales of the East, Edinburgh, 1812. Originally published as Les Aventures Merveilleuses du Mandarin Fum-Hoam, Contes Chinois (1723), and first translated two years later. Gueulette, 1683-1766, was a prolific imitator plundering earlier oriental tales by Francois Petis de la Croix, and Antoine Galland. In the original preface to his Oriental Tales, de Caylus, 1692-1795, claimed that they were taken from manuscript exercises by French youths sent to Turkey to be trained as interpreters to the Ambassadors, and then deposited in the Bibliotheque Royale. First edition with Thomas Stothard's engravings, and the sixth 18th-century edition overall. Stothard was then a young engraver, but was rapidly gaining prestige for his illustrations and artwork. Gueulette first published the Chinese Tales in French in 1723. Though entirely invented, it joined his other works such as Mogul Tales and Tartarian Tales to cement the author's key role in the "Oriental tale" genre, popular throughout the 18th century and lending itself readily to philosophical reflection.
