Harold Ivan Harding (1883-1943) served in the Chinese Consular Service between 1902 and 1937, and was Vice-Consul at Kashgar, China in 1922-23. This small privately published account of his journey from Srinagar through Gilgit to Kashgar is full of titbits of the country passed through, as he passed through Kashmir and the the Karakoram, describing the Astor river, Hunza, Rakaposhi, Baltit, Attabad, Batura Glacier, and more. Sir Michael Cavenagh Gillett (1907-1971) was Acting Consul General in Kashgar from 1938 to 1940, Acting Consul at Tengchong from 1940 to 1942, served as Chinese Secretary to the Legation in Chongqing in 1942, deputy consul general in Shanghai in 1947 and then Consul General in 1948-9, serving in China until 1953.
