Some surface blemishes on spine and covers. A couple pages are roughly opened. Small spots of soiling on Foreword pages, else interior is clean. 12 illustrations. x, 218 pages. Inscribed ''To my old friend / Mr. Whisnant / with cordial / Xmas[?] greetings / Esther Pohl Lovejoy''. The memoir of Dr. Esther Lovejoy, describing her experiences in the Paris factory district of Levallois in the winter of 1917-1918, during the First World War, working at the Residence Sociale, known to the locals as The House of the Good Neighbor. This charitable ''social house'' had as its mission the care of the children of women who worked in the factories, poor families, and other disadvantaged individuals, including young women and the elderly. It also functioned as ''a clearing house for people in distress, giving immediate help in emergencies, and cooperating with other agencies and organizations for the relief of human suffering. It was in touch with hospitals, dispensaries, maternities, pre-natal and post-natal homes, creeches, canteens, milk and supply depots of different kinds.'' Lovejoy goes into great detail about the life and work at the House, and the prevailing social conditions which necessitated these specific relief efforts, as well has her philosophy and views on this charitable work. Dr. Esther Pohl Lovejoy (1869-1967) was an American physician and public health pioneer, and a suffrage activist. In 1907, she became the first woman appointed to direct a department of health in a major U.S city (Portland, Oregon). She was the second woman to graduate from the University of Oregon Medical School, and the first to practice medicine. Later in life, in 1951 and 1957, she was awarded the Elizabeth Blackwell Medal by the American Medical Women's Association in for contributions to the field of medicine. Signed by Author(s).

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -On three occasions and at different locations, conferences were held to honor the eightieth birthday of Professor Herbert Frohlich: on the 18th December, 1985, in Liverpool, England; on the 14th February, 1986, in Stuttgart, Germany; and on the 8th March, 1986, on the Palm Coast, Florida. This Festschrift is a compilation of the papers of those conferences. Frohlich's choice of problems, from the earliest days, was couched in the phy sics of intrinsically interacting systems of excitation. One example, in which he set the course of research which is still followed, concerned dielectric breakdown, developed from the 1930's over several decades. The interacting systems are the electrons (receiving energy from an electric field) and lattice atom motion (taking energy from the electrons via 'electron-phonon' interaction, hence heat dissipa tion). There is a threshold field above which the latter cannot keep up with the former, and the combined system (electrons plus phonons) 'runs away'; that is to say, collectively it switches to a new state. 368 pp. Englisch.
