The book is a scholarly study of the still life paintings found in the houses and villas of Pompeii and Herculaneum, two cities buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. The book examines how still life imagery developed across the Second, Third, and Fourth Pompeian Styles, analysing their composition, colour, motifs, and placement within domestic wall decoration. Beyen explores how everyday objects such as fruit, vessels, food, and small decorative items were arranged to create symbolic, aesthetic, and illusionistic effects within Roman interiors. The union of the human with the horse part is certainly admirable: the eye readily distinguish the softness in the fair complexion of the woman, from that brightness which shines upon the white coat of the beast. The posture of the left hand, with which she touches the strings of the lyre is elegant; and equally gracefully is that by which she shows herself desirous of touching with one part of the cymbal which she holds in her right hand, the other part which, with a fancy truly great and picturesque, the artist has placed in the right hand of the young man; who embraces the woman closely with the left, which passes under her arm and appears again upon her shoulde. PLATE XXVI The handsome female centaur who is so elegantly figured in this picture, carries upon her back a girl clothed in yellow drapery: she is easily discovered to be a bacchant by her hyrsus, which she holds in her left hand, over her hair, which is partly loose, and partly tied up in a knot. In the centaur, besides the green drapery which descends from the left shoulder across the lions, it is observable, that her ears are sharp, and resemble those of a horse, that the brute part is extremely white, and that she has a festoon which seems to terminate in two small at the end of which are two little buttons, one of the handles (upon which are two strings or ribands) she holds with her left hand over her shoulder, the other with her right, which passes under the girl's arm, as if she was going to fasten her with it. If we will not allow this composition to have been the creature of the painter's imagination, it is not easy to comprehend the meaning of it. Plate size : 335 x 235mm.
