[++] " By 1964, a number of radio quasars were known and some of these radio sources had small angular sizes. With Paul Scott and Derek Wills, Hewish showed that the radio scintillations were due to scattering of the radio waves by inhomogeneities in the ionised plasma flowing out from the Sun, what is known as the solar wind. This wind had been predicted by Eugene Parker in 1958 and observed by the Soviet Luna satellites in 1959 and by the U.S. Mariner-2 satellite in 1962. The paper by Hewish, Scott, and Wills showed how radio source scintillations could be used to map the outflowing solar wind (A. Hewish, P. F. Scott, and D. Wills, Nature 203 [1964]: 1214 17) [the paper offered here]. Hewish realised that a large, low-frequency array dedicated to the measurement of the scintillations of compact radio sources would provide a new approach to the study of three important astronomical areas: (a) it would enable many more quasars to be discovered; (b) their angular sizes could be estimated; and (c) the structure and velocity of the solar wind could be determined."-- Michael Longair, "The Discovery of Pulsars and the Aftermath" in PROCEEDINGS OF THE AMERICAN PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY VOL. 155, NO. 2, JUNE 2011 pg 147. [++] Hewish received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1974 for his discovery of pulsars.

Contemporary full buckram with printed title on the spine. = This discovery was made at the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory, Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge and was reason for the Nobel Committee to grant Antony Hewish the Nobel Prize in physics. "One of his PhD students, Jocelyn Bell, noted the radio source which was ultimately recognised as the first pulsar. The paper announcing the discovery had five authors, Hewish's name being listed first, Bell's second. Hewish and Martin Ryle were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1974 for work on the development of radio aperture synthesis and its role in the discovery of pulsars. The Nobel award to Ryle and Hewish without the inclusion of Bell as a co-recipient was controversial, and was roundly condemned by Hewish's fellow astronomer Fred Hoyle" (Wikipedia). We offer the complete Nature Volume 217 which consists of thirteen issues (numbered 5123-5135) covering January-March 1968, bound in one volume. Bookplate on front pastedown; library stamp in the margin of the first index leaf. Otherwise, clean; the Pulsar paper pristine.

London, Macmillian and Co, 1968. Royal8vo. Bound in contemporary full cloth with title to spine. In "Nature", Vol. 217, 1968. Library stamp to upper right corner of title page, otherwise a fine and clean copy. Pp. 709-13. [Entier volume: XL, 1298 pp.]. First printing of the discovery of pulsars. Hewish was in 1974 awarded the Nobel Prize in physics "for his decisive role in the discovery of pulsars"."Their discovery, reported in 1968, came as a complete surprise, and astonishingly their radio signals behave like the ticks of a super-accurate clock. The unique characteristics of pulsars have since been used to explore the behaviour of gravity, the nature of nuclear matter, the late evolutionary stages of massive stars, and the character of the interstellar medium". (A Century of Nature). "Antony Hewish had played a central role in the development of aperture synthesis and in 1964 began the study of the twinkling, or scintillation, of radio sources due to irregularities in the outflow of material from the Sun, what is known as the solar wind. A remarkable by-product of these studies was the discovery of pulsating radio sources, subsequently called pulsars, by Hewish and his graduate student, Jocelyn Bell. These objects were soon convincingly identified as rapidly rotating, magnetized neutrons stars, which had been predicted to exist on theoretical grounds. Their serendipitous discovery at long radio wavelengths was a crucial event for all astronomy." (DSB).
