The first edition of a learned essay in Latin on the origins of the American Indians. It culminated a fierce debate that began with Grotius in his 1642 Dissertatio de origine gentium Americanarum, which argued that the American Indians of North America descended from Norsemen crossed via Iceland and Greenland; those of the Yucca…tan from Ethiopian Christians, also crossing the Atlantic; and the more "advanced" ones in Peru from Chinese who came by boat to the Pacific coast. Grotius based his theories partly on linguistic arguments, culture and artefacts, but also attempted to make the evidence fit the Biblical accounts of the world, and he supposed no people lived in the New World in pre-Christian times. Johannes de Laet published a sharp critique of Grotius's arguments in 1643, demolishing most of his edifice and suggesting numerous possible scenarios, particularly suggesting a much earlier (pre-Christian) migration from Scythia across a land bridge between America and Tartary. The two men continued an even more heated exchange. Grotius's death in 1645 gave the last word to De Laet, who nevertheless urged the young Hornius (1620-1670), to take the study further, leading to the present account. In very good condition. With title-page in red and black with De Croy's(?) woodcut tree device (with letterpress motto: "Societas Illaesa"), a woodcut headpiece (plus repeats), a woodcut tailpiece bearing Philippe de Croy's name, and 5 woodcut decorated initials (plus 1 repeat). Set in roman and italic types with occasional words in Greek, Hebrew and Arabic. Pages: [20], 282 pp.

Original and only edition of this curious work which can be considered as a partly historical, and partly scientific 'history of the world', including all kinds of arguments concerning chemistry, physics, anatomy and even alchemy. Hornius felt the need for philological criticism to back up what he saw to be 'integral history', a…nd was fully involved both in Reformation's attack on Scholasticism and in the rebirth of literature and the emergence of philology. 'I have not come across any book more curious, less known and scarcer the Arca Mosis is one of the most original books which I have ever met with' (Ferguson, Bibl. notes on histories of inventions and books of secrets).Hornius, following a third road between Aristotelism and mechanism as represented by Comenius c.s., treated universal history in a modern manner, no longer divided into the history of the four classical empires (Assyria, Persia, Macedon, Rome) but based on the concept of national history, including the history of the peoples of the New World (De originibus Americanis). He was also one of the earliest historiographers to divide world history into three major epochs, antiquity from earliest times until the Migration period, the middle period from the Migration period to the year 1500, and modern history from 1500 to his own day. Divided into six panels and oriented to the East, this map covers Israel of the Holy Land from the southern tip of the Dead Sea and Edom to the Golan Heights and modern day Lebanon. This map is an expansion and enlargement of a smaller plan of the samen general area issued by Christian van Adricham around 1590. Jansson expanded and embellished Adricham`s map in order to illustrate the text composed by Georgius Hornius (George Horn) for volume six of His `Novus Atlas, Accuratissima Orbis Antiqui Delineatio`. Consequently some refer to this map, which is as a whole untitled, as the `Hornius Map.` As a whole this map embellished with countless vignettes and other images drawn from Biblical tradition. The smoking ruisn of Sodom and Gomorra appear in the Dead Sea, Jonas is drawn being devoured by the whale, there is a mountain on which Jesus arguing with Satan, etc. Each of the tribes of Israel are named and associated with their lands. Copper engraving, 85 x 179 cm. The complete map comprising 6 parts on 8 conjoined sheets, a very good example. Framed and glazed, overall size: 96cm by 190.5cm. A rare map, covering the land modern of day Israel and beyond - from the southern tip of the Dead Sea and Edom region to the Golan Heights and modern day Lebanon. The ma…p was included in the sixth volume of Janssonius' Novus Atlas, Accuratissimia Orbis Antiqui Delineatio. The same sixth volume, but with a different title was also sold as a separate historical atlas. The atlas was first published in 1652, and the following year a 32 pages long introduction by Georgius Hornius was added to the publication. It is assumed that the current map was based on an earlier map by Christian Kruik van Adrichem, published circa 1590. Johannes Janssonius expanded Adrichem's map in order to illustrate Hornius' text in his atlas. Consequently, some refer to this map as the 'Hornius Map'. Georgius Hornius (a.k.a. Georg Horn or Horne) was a German historian, geographer, theologian and professor. In 1649 he wrote a thesis on theology in Leiden, after which he became a professor of History and Geography at Harderwijk and later in Leiden. Johannes Janssonius was a Dutch cartographer and publisher. He owned several bookshops in Germany, Sweeden and Switzerland. In 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, also from a booksellers family and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius. A small in-set map at the upper-left corner depicts Abraham's and the Israelites journey through the desert. The main map is divided to 'Nahalot' (plural of 'Nahala' - meaning inheritance or property in Hebrew - the name of a piece of land that was given to each Israeli tribe). Each Nahala is marked with the name of its tribe. Also many famous biblical scenes can be found on the map, at the presumed place of occurrence: the smoking ruins of Sodom and Gomorra soaking in the Dead Sea; Moses looking across the Jordan River near the entry point of the Hebrews to the land of Milk and Honey (two rays of light coming out of his head); the prophet Elijah departs in his chariot of fire; Joseph's tomb near Beit-El; Samson's fight with the Lion; Samson releasing the three hundred foxes onto the Philistine's land; future King David hiding from King Saul in a cave near Ein Gedi and so on. Mit seiner dreibändigen Historia Universalis (1702) machte er die Einteilung der Geschichtswissenschaft in Alte, Mittelalterliche und Neue Geschichte kanonisch. Zuvor wurde Universalgeschichte nach der Abfolge von insgesamt vier aufeinander folgenden Weltreichen periodisiert.
