Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Good dj. First Edition. [book is modestly shelfworn, with bumping to lower corners and a bit of fading to the cloth along the top edge; the jacket is worn and soiled, browned at the spine, with various small chips and tears, a bit of paper loss at the spine ends, etc.]. "The founded-on-facts story of a life on a well-known American campus of today, among the undergraduates who people today's colleges with today's talent for spirited, amusing, exciting living. [But it's] not a sensational expose, a penny-catching shocker, or a tirade against Flaming Youth. It is something DIFFERENT in the realm of college fiction -- a completely honest picture of behind-the-scenes life during a year in a typical fraternity house." Not surprisingly, given its place of publication ("in this limited edition only"), it's not included in John O. Lyons's "The College Novel in America, nor in Hanna; OCLC records only nine copies. This was the author's second novel; she went on to pen a couple of mysteries in the 1940s, and then seems to have settled into the nurse/romance genre. (Curiously, the book's dedication is "To my brothers in Phi Delta Theta." Have I mis-gendered the author?). Illustrated by (dj design) William Frederick Howes, Jr. (illustrator). …

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. Author: Horace; David Hunter; Francis Howes Publisher: John W. Parker / William Pickering Place of Publication: London Publication Dates: 1838 and 1845 Binding: Half leather Condition: Good Edition: Two works bound together Full Description London: John W. Parker, West Strand, 1838 and William Pickering, 1845. Two English interpretations of the works of Horace bound together in one volume: The Satires and Epistles of Horace, Interpreted by David Hunter. London: John W. Parker, West Strand, 1838. 237 pages. The Epodes, Satires, and Epistles of Horace, Translated into English Prose, as Near the Original as the Different Idioms of the Latin and English Languages Will Allow, with the Latin Text and Order of Construction in the Opposite Page and Critical, Historical, Geographical and Classical Notes, in English, from the Best Commentators Both Ancient and Modern, with a Preface to Each Satire and Epistle, Illustrating Their Principal Beauties. By Francis Howes. London: William Pickering, 1845. xiv, 288 pages. Bound together in an attractive half-calf binding over burgundy cloth boards, with raised spine bands, decorative gilt tooling and two red morocco title labels lettered in gilt: "Satires and Epistles of Horace" and "Hunter and Howes." The front board bears a gilt wheatsheaf device. The binding remains tight and sound, with square boards firmly attached. There is general handling wear, rubbing and scuffing to the front and rear boards, together with wear and small areas of leather loss at the corners, spine ends and raised bands. The gilt spine lettering remains clear and attractive. The inside front board bears the ownership bookplate "E Libris Roberti Comitis de Crewe," identifying the volume as formerly belonging to Robert Offley Ashburton Crewe-Milnes, Earl and later 1st Marquess of Crewe. The gilt wheatsheaf device on the front board further enhances the volume's distinctive Crewe provenance. There is an ink ownership inscription on the first front endpaper and a further ink inscription on the following endpaper. Pencil notes appear on the rear endpaper. Internally, the text blocks of both works are exceptionally well preserved and remain in near-fine condition. The pages are clean, clear and firmly bound, with only minor age-related marks. Both title pages are present and the second work begins with its own separately numbered pagination. An uncommon and particularly appealing association copy, combining two nineteenth-century English interpretations of Horace in one handsome volume. The distinguished Crewe provenance, attractive gilt-decorated binding and unusually clean internal condition make this a desirable copy for a collector of classical literature, Horace or historic British library books. Condition Summary Good. Binding tight and boards square and firmly attached. Handling wear, rubbing and scuffing to the leather and cloth, with small areas of leather loss at the corners, spine ends and raised bands. Crewe ownership bookplate to the inside front board.
