Introduction by Hubert Faensen. Commentary by Hubert Faensen and Vladimir Ivanov. The first English edition of this wonderful work on the striking early Russian architecture, illustrated profusely throughout in color and monochrome. Hubert Faensen (* 29 December 1928 in Sandau, Czechoslovakia; 23 January 2019 in Kleinmachnow) was a German art historian and long-time publishing director. From 1949 to 1952 he worked as a trainee and culture editor at the CDU newspaper Der Demokrat in Schwerin under editor-in-chief Hugo Reinhart. From 1952 he studied philosophy and art history at the Humboldt University in Berlin with Richard Hamann, in 1955 he graduated with a degree in philosophy, and in 1959 he received his doctorate under Wolfgang Heise. Parallel to his publishing activities, he researched and published primarily in the fields of early Christian, Byzantine, and Eastern European art. He held teaching positions at the Humboldt University of Berlin, particularly on Old Russian art. In 1973, he received his doctorate (Dr. sc.) from the Humboldt University of Berlin, and in 1977, he was appointed Facultas Docendi (Faculty of Docendi). From 1982 to the fall of 1992, he was a full professor of art history there. Dr. Vladimir Ivan was Vice-President of the all-Russian Association for the Preservation of Ancient Monuments. He was the author of several books on early Russian architecture and of article on methods of preservation and restoration. Klaus G. Beyer (actually Klaus Günter Beyer; * March 6, 1922 in Weimar; 2007) was a German photographer. Beyer's parents were Günther Beyer (19881965), head of the Thuringian State Photo Agency from 1934 to 1945, and Helena Beyer (18891973). He was drafted into the Wehrmacht and served in World War II as a soldier. After returning from captivity, he completed an apprenticeship as a photographer from 1946 to 1948. From then on, he worked as a photographer with a photo studio in Weimar. In 1958, he earned a master's degree in photography. From 1980 he held a teaching position at the Weimar University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, specializing in architectural and object photography of artistic objects. He was the first foreigner to be officially commissioned by the Indian government to photograph the Taj Mahal. Beyer's photographs were published in over 110 books between 1958 and 1987 alone, many of them illustrated books. From 1960 to 1984, Beyer undertook working trips to Bulgaria, India, Poland, Romania, the USSR, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary. From 1966 to 2003 alone, Beyer's photographs were shown in almost 40 exhibitions at home and abroad, including in 1982 at the Weimar Galerie Roter Turm ("Camera + Art. Klaus G. Beyer on his 60th Birthday") and from 1977 to 1988 at the 8th to 10th Art Exhibitions of the GDR. Derived from a Kirkus review: This scholarly gazetteer and guide to the development of design, decoration and iconography in the churches and monasteries of old Russia, from the 10th century to the reign of Peter the Great, covers every major monument from the White Sea to the Black, with detailed plans.
