Book in clean, tight, unmarked condition. Excellent quality paper; supple leaves. No library stamps; no ownership names or markings. Original brown cloth; gilt-lettered, leather spine label. Fictional account of life and death of Sidonia von Borcke (1548-1620), a Pomeranian noble woman accused of witchcraft, tortured and executed. Translated by Lady Wilde (1821-1896), the mother of Oscar Wilde. Author was outspoken Pomeranian priest Meinhold; Lowinsky was a renowned British artist and illustrator.

Illustrated with ten full-page and one smaller drawing, plus a decoration on the title-page, all by Thomas Lowinsky. This is the TRADE EDITION in the RARE DUSTWRAPPER. Publisher's mid-brown boards with gilt lettering to the spine. Boards exceptionally bright and clean. No inscriptions. The merest hint of wear at the base of the spine otherwise a fine copy. The rare dustwrapper is in fair condition with significant chipping to the spine (in particular) and to the edges of both the front and back panels. The presence of the dustwrapper has, however, protected the boards remarkably well. A delightful cookery notebook written by English society hostess and food writer, Ruth Lowinsky.'Lovely Food' was Lowinsky's debut work, in which she presents a number of bourgeoise recipes for various occasions, including high tea, picnics and a shooting lunch. Charmingly illustrated by the author's husband, the surrealist Thomas Esmond Lowinsky. At the rear of the book is a Hostess Notebook which has not been filled in. Printed at the Fanfare Press in London on Batchelor Kelmscott hand-made paper. Publisher's brick-red cloth over quarter brown buckram, gold-blocked with roundels; gilt-titled spine, top edge trimmed. No inscriptions. A fine copy in a near very good dustwrapper which is darkened to the spine and with moderate wear (not affecting any lettering). The dustwrapper is printed solely with the two-word title on the front panel and the words Limited Edition to the inside flap. [Bitting, page 294, Dreyfus 79, Myers 14]. Quite scarce in dustwrapper due to the fragility of the thin paper used. A rare survival. Emilie Lowinsky (nee Hirsch, 1893-1958), was a Jewish English society hostess and food writer. Her husband, the surrealist painter Thomas Esmond Lowinsky (1892-1947), provided illustrations for this, her first book. At the rear of the book is a Hostess Notebook which has not been filled in.
