A snapshot of a young man on a balcony led to a creased airmail envelope that in turn snaked around a column and headed toward some pages from Dante's Inferno. There was even a video fragment of the 1963 Peter Sellers film, The Pink Panther. As I followed the trail of what appeared to be something between a personal archive and a cache of evidence, the humble snapshots, handwritten notes and yellowing leaflets unfurled a startling narrative. Material for a film (2004-ongoing) collates fragments of the life of Palestinian intellectual Wael Zuaiter. Like many of his countrymen, Zuaiter lived in exile, making Rome his base from the 1960s until 1972.
