Hardbound. Red Cloth with color pictorial glossy dustjacket. 424 pp., profusely illustrated in color with over 209 items listed and illustrated. A beautiful book that showcases how circus figures and artifacts have been portrayed in art over the past two centuries. The circus is a dazzling world filled with acrobats and harlequins, tumblers and riders, monsters and celestial creatures. Now this engaging book sets that world in a new light, examining how painters, sculptors, and photographers from the eighteenth century to the present have used the circus as a springboard for their imaginative expression and have envisioned the clown as a metaphor for the modern artist. The book presents more than 175 works by such artists as Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Rouault, Picasso, Chagall, and Léger. Some of these are masterful works shown for the first time; these range from the 18-meter stage curtain Picasso designed in 1917 for Erik Satie's ballet Parade to more intimate works such as Nadar and Tournachon's photographs of Pierrot as played by celebrated mime Charles Debureau. Catalogue of an exhibition held at Galeries nationales du Grand Palais, Paris, France from March 12 to May 31, and National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, from June 25 to Sept. 19, 2004./ Issued also in French under title: La grande parade./ Includes bibliographical references (pages 391-412) and index. Abstract: As European settlers in America explored the strange landscapes of the New World, their artistic vocabulary drew on the painterly traditions of the Old World, in particular the works of John Martin, J.M.W. Turner, Caspar David Friedrich, C.G. Carus, Gustave Courbet, and Gustave Dore Romantic evocations of the sublime were transplanted into scenes of the uninhabited West, as well as into the late 19th-century conquest of the arctic regions, by painters such as F.E. Church, and the photographer Eadweard Muybridge. With contributions by internationally acclaimed historians of art and science, this beautifully illustrated book will be essential reading for students of 19th- and 20th-century art, photography, and architecture, as well as for all those interested in the history of representation in the modern world. The Great Parade: Portrait of the Artist as Clown; edited by Jean Clair; Exhibition organized by Pierre Theberge; Yale University Press, New Haven, in association with the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, 2004. From the Foreword - In the spring of 1998, early in my first year as Director, Jean Clair gave a lecture at the National Gallery of Canada during a Picasso exhibition. He spoke about the artist's "Italian Period" beginning in 1917, when Picasso was working with the Ballets Russes on the gigantic stage curtain for Satie's Parade. The curtain depicts the classic clowns Harlequin, the netherworld rogue, and Pierre, the mute poet, seated backstage among other circus figures, watching an angelic equestrian reaching heavenward, guided by a monkey. While Picasso found meaning in the characters of the commedia dell'arte as allegorical representations of social figures of the past, they also seemed present in his contemporary world. So, too, did they stand for the many roles of the artist himself: critic, dissenter, outcast, wanderer, enchanter, acrobat, clown. The cosmic symbolism of Parade rekindled a subject of mutual interest - that of nineteenth - and twentieth- century artists' continuing fascination with the circus and its denizens. An exhibition idea was born. In this exhibition we explore the circus as the locale for artists' imaginative expression, and the clown as a metaphor for the condition of the modern artist. The Great Parade: Portrait of the Artist as Clown sets out to explore the magical world of the circus and its appeal to artists. It is a fascination we share with them. This very large and heavy book, 423 pages, is in fine condition in a near-fine dust jacket, that is enclosed in a protective mylar wrap. This large and heavy book may require additional postage.
