This is a very scarce "Supplement to Echo 1883-84 " Latin church choral music published by the American Cecilian Society, under the title "Echo: Monthly Journal of Church Music. It features works by Singenberger, J. Handl (Gallus), Bischoff, Wiltberger, and many others. . The volume is handsomely bound with leather spine and corners. The table of contents and title are hand-written in manuscript, presumably by "F.H. Gabel, D.D." who signed his name on the contents page.The "Echo" was the English language version of the Caecilia, the official publication of the American Cecilian Society, or "Amerikanische Cacilien-Verein", founded and edited by J.B. Singenberger, from 1874-1924. This is supplement to the years 1883-84 is quite scarce, the only copies we find are in university libraries in St. Louis and in Germany. Condition of this volume is fair. It is bound in 3/4 leather and the leather is quite scuffed and worn, brown cloth boards . The binding is sewn and the thread is weak and in danger of breaking. Pages appear to be all there, some are a bit loose with some browning and chipping at the edges, but the music is clean and clear. Quite scarce, deserving of a home that respects and honors Catholic church music of the 1800s, as preserved by Singenberger. Johann Baptist Singenberger (John Singenberger) (25 May 1848\ 29 May 1924) was a Swiss composer, music teacher, editor and publisher. His works comprised a large part of the repertory of the Catholic Church's music. He was reckoned to have taught over 1,000 musicians in his lifetime. Singenberger founded the American St. Cecilia Society (American Cecilian Society) in 1873, an organization seeking to revive the Catholic masses and motets of Palestrina. Singenberger was also a professor of music at the Catholic Normal School in St. Francis, Wisconsin. Singenberger was born on May 25, 1848 in the province of St. Gall in Switzerland. He attended St. George Seminary in St. Gall where he befriended Sebastian Gebhard Messmer, who later became Archbishop of Milwaukee. They both graduated from St. Gall in 1861. In 1872 he went to Regensburg to study under Fr. F. Witt. While he was at Regensburg, the celebrated firm of Pustet decided to publish Singenberger's first collection of hymns. With its publication began a lifelong friendship between Singenberger and members of the publishing family.Singenberger went to the United States in April 1873. He maintained the seat of President for the American Caecilia Society for over 30 years. He was an editor and publisher of a monthly church music periodical for over 50 years. In the words of one of his students, "There has been no other man in America, equally prominent in all phases of church music, equally recognized outside the country, and of equal length of service." His experiment on a willow tree has been considered among the earliest quantitative studies on plant nutrition and growth and constitutes a milestone in the history of biology. "Helmont was one of the founders of gases, and indeed invented the word ?gas'. He introduced the gravimetric idea in the analysis of urine.? (Heirs of Hippocrates) Johann Baptist von Helmont (1577-1644) was a Flemish chemist, physiologist, and physician known for his pioneering work in early chemistry and medicine. He is often considered one of the founders of modern chemistry and was a significant figure in the transition from alchemy to chemistry: "Helmont devoted his life to exploring the first principles of nature through chemistry. He is best remembered as the discoverer of gas, a term he coined to describe the 'specific smokes' that remain after the combustion of solids and fluids" among the gases he identified were carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, chlorine gas and sulphur dioxide. He denied that metals dissolved in acid were either destroyed or transmuted, stating that such metals were recoverable in their original quantities, and correctly identifying the process of precipitation. Like Paracelsus, he rejected traditional humoral pathology and advocated an ontological concept of disease, regarding each disease as a specific entity caused by a specific pathogenic agent. He demonstrated that acid is the agent in animal digestion and came near to identifying it as hydrochloric acid" he also identified the causes of asthma and correctly described fever as a part of the body's natural healing process.? (Norman 1048) Though separately paginated, 'Opuscula medica inaudita' is considered a part of the whole volume.
