This volume falls within that date range. Boards are still in good shape, with clear lettering on the front cover and spine. Interior pages are clean and unmarked, but a bit age tanned.

There is one pink stamp each on the title page and Page 128 that reads, "Library, State Institution for the Deaf and Dumb, and the Blind, Berkeley, Cal." The stamps do not affect text. Tipped-in pocket label on the back pastedown lists the terms of checking out books from the library and instructs patrons to place their cards in the pocket when the book in on loan. A card is included in this pocket. Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Binding is tight. Some dust on the top edge of the text block not affecting pages internally. No external markings, except for slight rubbing. A Fine copy. This book is part of a thirty-six-volume biographical series titled, English Men of Letters, which was edited by John Morley and written by different authors. This book is no. 9 of 36 in the series. One ad in the back lists other books in the series that had been released to date. Biography of William Cowper (1731-1800), an English poet and writer of hymns. He was popular in his time and arguably a forerunner of the Romanticist movement in literature.

He begins by thanking the unnamed recipient for his 'kind attention to my request' and giving his coming address at Guildford as 'J. Pagan's Esqre | Oak Lodge'. The letter continues: 'There is no doubt as to the general fact that the independent yeomanry of former days have disappeared before the great proprietors in every part of England except the extreme North, where they still linger under the name of "States men".' He laments 'the absence of any exact statistics to present the fact tangibly in any particular county'. The matter can be ascertained 'by local knowledge alone'. He concludes by stating that he could satisfy the recipient's friend 'as to the probable accuracy of the number 4000 which rests on the excellent authority of Rushworth'.

Two unrecorded anti-slavery pamphlets addressing the forced migration of labourers from the Polynesian islands and of so-called 'coolie emigration' from 'French West Indian and South American possessions' to British India. These otherwise unknown texts have been bound alongside two classic British pamphleteering texts attacking American slavery, during the Civil War, five other imprints and a long autograph poem which was written in response to a challenge by 'some malicious belles'. The two texts by Robert Shaw on 'Coolie Emigration' and 'Coolie Traffic' are puzzlingly absent from institutional libraries. The first draws on four letters that Shaw wrote to 'The Times of India'; the second pamphlet deals with the threat 'to depopulate the beautiful islands of the Pacific, and to introduce into our Australian Colonies. social disorganisation and moral corruption.' The first of these is inscribed from 'Gen.l Shaw' to a fellow general although we can find no such record of a General Shaw in India at this time. DESCRIPTION Nicely bound in burgundy half morocco over marbled boards; pamphlet list to front pastedown. The pamphlets are of various sizes and the Cape Town imprint is followed by a long manuscript poem written by a 'Mr Saddleton' or similar. An intriguing volume.
