Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. This is the rare oversized first edition, which first appeared in 1921, of "Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates". It's a 1930 printing of this edition, which has an extra story and about 70 additional illustrations that are missing from the other editions, which is what makes this edition particularly sought after. Plus the pictures and text are in the public domain, so they're free to use. The book's large size provides higher quality images. Howard Pyle was one of the great illustrators of his time and this book is the source of many of the best pirate images out there. You often see them on other pirate book covers, ads, and posters. I used one on the cover of my book "Captured by Pirates". Aside from the expected age tanning of the paper, the interior is in near fine condition. The cover has some visible wear and aging, but is intact and strong. It's in very good condition. It also has its rare dust jacket, which is in a clear Mylar protective cover. It has some large chips and tears, particularly on the spine, but is still in good condition. Abe is unable to correctly determine shipping, so it might be different depending on where you are and how quickly you want it. Please email me your town and zip code so I can calculate it. Because of its large size, it will require addition packing material to protect it. It's also quite heavy. I used to sell these for $300.00. I sold about half a dozen or more at that price. This is the one I kept for my personal collection and it's the last one I have. I've priced it low in order to sell it quickly. You should get it before it's gone. Pyle, Howard (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 3rd Edition. On offer here: "Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates- Fiction, Fact & Fancy concerning the Buccaneers & Marooners of the Spanish Main": from the writing & pictures of Howard Pyle, compiled by Merle Johnson. This large hard cover book was published by Harper & Brothers of New York and London, dated 1921 and with the code: "E-A" on the copyright page. I have included a photo of the Table of Contents for your information. The book is very well illustrated with plenty of action-oriented scenes from paintings by Howard Pyle of Pirates and their lives, some in color and some in black-and-white. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers have been bumped at the corners and spine tips and the upper spine has been professionally repaired although the gilt titles there are virtually invisible. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages and plates, both color and b&w are clean and bright and without toning or foxing. I did see one page with a tiny tear in the upper corner. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Howard Pyle (illustrator).

SECOND PRINTING OF THE FIRST EDITION hardcover (code K-V on copyright page; true first edition had code D-V), quarter-bound in black cloth with brown pictorial board, is in G condition, having tiny tear at bottom of front cover (see photo); some very faint wrinkling to bottom front board also; tipped-in color plate of pirate on front cover shows some very slight wear; back cover shows some light stained area at top; some rubbing wear to spine (see photo); corners lightly bumped and worn; former owner's attractive 1920s-style book plate (un-named) with the motto: "The Poetry of Earth is Never Dead" is on first fixed endpaper (see photo); slight foxing and darkening to endpaper sections; binding is very slightly shaken with threads slightly visibe in first endpaper section (still a very solid copy); dust jacket, enclosed in protective mylar (mylar not pictured), is in G condition, having been re-inforced with ancient tape on inside of jacket (absolutely NO bleed-through of tape on outer dj surface)--this was to repair or prevent small tears to edges which there are a few, as well as some tiny missing pieces from top and bottom jacket spine, and fold areas. Jacket also sports the identical color pirate plate featured on the book's front, also tipped-in (and this has some wear to surface) (see photo); dj also has some rubbing/scuffing, creasing and staining to surface (see photos). A landmark book on imagining the buccaneers of the Spanish Main and elsewhere, with a variety of magazine-published writing by Pyle, compiled by Merle Johnson. Book is illustrated with color plates, b&w plates, and in-text b&w drawings by Howard Pyle. Book also features two color plates not listed on the illustration page: two tipped-in plates, one on p. 232 and the other on p. 239, both illustrating the story of "The Ruby of Kishmoor." Literature. United States. All ages. Classic stories. Pirates. Buccaneers. Freebooters. Caribbean. Adventure tales. Because of the weight of the book, (58 oz), extra shipping cost may apply. [DB 6]. Copyright page code is "B-X", which translates as February, 1923. "The title of this volume was not chosen idly - it was chosen because these Howard Pyle pictures do breathe an 'American Spirit'. Beyond technical excellence which has caused artists to treasure proofs of these pictures, beyond the unquestioned accuracy of costume and setting, is the spiritual, personal something that makes pictures live. Pyle furnishes a window into our American past as given by no word historian: wholesome, homely, full of interest." - Foreword by Merle Johnson.
