Norman Dyhrenfurth's copy, with his ex libris and ownership signature to front pastedown. Simler (1530-1576) was a scholar at the University of Zurich. His description of the Alps (Vallesiæ et Alpium descriptio, 1574), is considered the first book devoted to mountains. This translation into German by Alfred Steinitzer contains a prefatory chapter on Simler and his work. This copy belonged to Norman Dyhrenfurth, leader of the 1963 American Everest expedition, and son of the Himalayan explorers Gunther and Hettie Dyhrenfurth. Signed by Author(s).

Simler, (1530-1576), was a Swiss theologian and classicist, born in Kappel. became professor at Zurich, and wrote the first work dealing solely with the Alps. This work probably a second printing, with the devices on page 4 and last page of index, printed in the same year as the first, of the Elzevir edition of a work originally published in 1576. Minor writing on end papers, of a bibliographical nature. No marks in text, binding tight. Ffep and rear free end paper chipped. Covers show some soiling. Oft reprinted, this is the first comprehensive history of Switzerland. Book condition VG. Binding: HB.

Seconda edizione di uno scritto nel quale il naturalista svizzero Josias Simler (1530-76) si produce in un "sorprendente" resoconto geografico delle vallate alpestri. Viene considerato il testo standard sull'argomento per tutto il XVII. secolo. Le finalità di Simler erano di far conoscere meglio il suo paese nativo, perciò prese studiare il territorio ed a tradurre in latino parte della cronaca di Johann Stumpf, ne nacque il presente studio: il primo libro dedicato interamente alle Alpi. Condition: molto buono. in-32, mm. 115x60, pp. 535, [17] ; titolo frontespizio inciso, legatura coeva piena pelle, titolo manoscritto al dorso.   Josias Simler (Kappel, 1530-Zurigo, 1576), pastore protestante e teologo, fu autore del primo libro dedicato unicamente alle Alpi, De Alpibus commentarius, e curatore della riedizione della Bibliotheca universalis del Gesner. Nella sua opera De republica Helvetiorum libri duo sostenne che, sebbene la Confederazione fosse priva di un organo esecutivo supremo, uno degli elementi distintivi dello Stato, essa era composta da membri il cui livello di coesione permetteva comunque di parlare di uno Stato svizzero. Nel 1691 Franz Michael Büeler definì la Svizzera uno Stand confederale, ossia come uno Stato, secondo la terminologia di quel tempo. Quando nel 1735 Johann Jacob Leu pubblicò un'edizione rivista dell'opera di Simler, riprese l'idea di Confederale quale Stato federale; la sua presentazione introduttiva della Svizzera costituisce un primo esempio di dottrina federalista.   . Figlio di un pastore protestante, il teologo svizzero Josias Simmler, nome latinizzato Simlerus (Kappel, 1530-1576) fu docente all'ateneo di Zurigo. Si deve a lui il primo tentativo di studio sistematico della Svizzera, recuperando anche i testi degli scrittori latini, e in particolare con la traduzione latina della "Chronik" di Johann Stumpf. Il risultato di tale lavoro fu il presente testo, dato alle stampe con il titolo di "De Alpibus commentarius" nel 1574, celebre come primo saggio in assoluto dedicato allo studio delle Alpi dopo la prima parte dedicata al Cantone Vallese. 100 gr.

Unter beträchtlichen Schwierigkeiten, da die Regimentsbeschaffenheit in manchen Ständen noch wie ein Staatsgeheimniss gehütet wurde, liess sich Leu von Vertrauensleuten die notwendigen Informationen zukommen. "Zweierlei wollte er mit der Neuauflage. Zum einen wollte er Simmlers Werk in seinen historischen Teil ergänzen, indem er es bis auf die eigene Zeit fortführte und erweiterte es durch den Bericht über die Epoche vom "Ursprung" der Helvetier bis zu Kaiser Rudolf I. Zum anderen aber bemühte er sich, die staatsrechtlichen Erläuterungen in der Weise mit Anmerkungen zu versehen, dass sie auch für die Gegenwart Gülitigkeit erhielten". Cromwell studierte diese Systematik der Schweizergeschichte beim Aufbau des britischen Staates. Contemporary full vellum binding with inked titles to the spine, and the monogram ('HL') and Viscount's coronet of Henry Yelverton, 1st Viscount de Longueville (1664-1704) to the front and rear boards. Vellum is a little darkened, but substantially sound. Woodcut medallion on title with the coat of arms of the 13 cantons and 7 cities, second medallion on leaf 16 verso, showing the oath of the first three confederates (repeated on last leaf verso). Loosely inserted is a hand written sheet, in English, explaining the work, and naming the cantons and states in the medallion. 16 leaves, 562 pp., 12 leaves. First French edition of Josias Simler's (1530-1576) main work, his "Republica Helvetiorum". Until the end of the old Confederation, it was the most popular book on Swiss constitutional law, published one year after the first Latin edition in Zurich in 1576. The handwritten note states that it was translated by the jurist Innocent Gentillet (died in Geneva around 1595). It deals with public, political, and social order. In the first part, Simler offers a history of the confederacies, similar to the chronicles of Stumpf and Tschudi. The second part is a complete and lively presentation of the Swiss Confederation during his own times. Complete. 15cm x 10cm. Henry Yelverton, 1st Viscount de Longueville (1664 -1704) inherited the title of 15th Baron Grey of Ruthin in 1679. He supported William of Orange during his invasion in 1688, and in 1690 was created Viscount de Longueville. He amassed a substantial library which remained in his family until dispersals in the late 18th century. .
