Unveiling the Republic of the Swiss Confederates, this book transports you to the heart of a remarkable period in history, where the cantons of Switzerland defied imperial authority to forge a unique and enduring alliance. From their origins in the 13th century, through their heroic battles against the Habsburgs, and their pivotal role in the Reformation, the author traces the rise of the Swiss Confederacy, shedding light on the key events, figures, and ideas that shaped its destiny. Delving into the political, military, and cultural aspects of the Confederacy, the author explores the intricate relationships between the cantons, their struggles for autonomy, and their innovative system of government. The book examines the Confederacy's military prowess, detailing their formidable army of citizen-soldiers and their groundbreaking tactics that proved invincible against greater forces. It also delves into the religious strife that engulfed the Confederacy during the Reformation, and the challenges faced by the cantons as they navigated the tumultuous religious landscape of Europe. Through vivid descriptions of battles, political maneuvers, and cultural traditions, this book brings to life the spirit of the Swiss Confederacy, showcasing the courage, ingenuity, and determination that defined this remarkable nation. It offers a deep understanding of the ideas and values that underpinned the Confederacy's success, providing valuable lessons for anyone interested in the history of confederations, republics, and the enduring legacy of the Swiss people. . Vellum is a little darkened, but substantially sound. First French edition of Josias Simler's (1530-1576) main work, his "Republica Helvetiorum". Until the end of the old Confederation, it was the most popular book on Swiss constitutional law, published one year after the first Latin edition in Zurich in 1576. The handwritten note states that it was translated by the jurist Innocent Gentillet (died in Geneva around 1595). It deals with public, political, and social order. In the first part, Simler offers a history of the confederacies, similar to the chronicles of Stumpf and Tschudi. The second part is a complete and lively presentation of the Swiss Confederation during his own times. Complete. 15cm x 10cm. Henry Yelverton, 1st Viscount de Longueville (1664 -1704) inherited the title of 15th Baron Grey of Ruthin in 1679. He supported William of Orange during his invasion in 1688, and in 1690 was created Viscount de Longueville. He amassed a substantial library which remained in his family until dispersals in the late 18th century. .

Josias Simler was a swiss theologian and humanist, he was professor of New Testament exegesis at Zürich's Carolinum academy where he also taught mathematics and Ptolemaic astronomy, and in 1560 became professor of theology. More importantly, he is well-known for its treatises on Switzerland. Indeed, La republique des suisses is the first handbook of Switzerland as represented by the woodcut with depiction of the Rütli oath surrounded by the coats of arms of the cantons. The treatise is a comprehensive history of the Swiss Confederation, accompanied by a careful analysis of domestic politics, administration and the Swiss constitution is presented. It is therefore the first description of a modern democracy and was regarded as the leading authority on Swiss constitutional matters until the time of Napoleon.
